"¿Usted está seguro que esto es lo que usted quiere, mijito?" Ancyous gazed harshly at his brother, his fingers tightly closed over a small crystal decanter he'd placed on the table that stood between them, its rust colored contents roiling restlessly as though alive. "I question the wisdom of your decision considering all that you've done to gain control over Rhiannon's cursed clutch upon your father's heir. If there were to be war in Faerwhynne would you make the same choice?"
Kaylor scowled and turned away, refusing to answer.
"No, of course you would not because it would place The Black Knight upon the throne, thus fulfilling the witch's prophecy and bringing her curse to fruition."
"I will not destroy Faerwhynne, Ancyous! This decision is entirely mine! May Rhiannon rot in hell where I've sent her!"
"She'll see you there, Kaylor, for the magic bound within this container may never be reversed."
"So be it!"
Kaylor grabbed the decanter, pulling it free of his brother's grasp. Then, taking the stairs two at a time, he made his way to his bedchamber. Minutes later the silence was broken by a loud cry of anguish followed by the sound of furniture crashing hard against walls. _________________ *Even if you be otherwise perfect, you fail without humility. ~ The Talmud* |

Carefully navigating icy patches on the steps to Kaylor’s door, Eclyse hefted an armload of firewood and shifted it over onto one arm. Without warning, an anguished cry split the soft silence of snowfall. Instantly, she let the logs scatter from her embrace and roll down the steps at her feet as she sprinted the last few steps to the front door. A clatter and crash from upstairs stopped her where she stood. She lifted a frightened gaze to the balcony and paused, her fingertips resting lightly upon the door latch. . . |
