Kaylor kicked wide the door, the heavy wooden aperture giving way beneath the force of his boot, allowing him the instant entry his waning stamina required. He'd managed to convoke enough energy for drink and discussion at the meadhall immediately following the battle, however his ability to maintain concealment of the pain wracking his chest had eventually taken its toll, leaving him little choice but to soon make excuse to depart away home. Eclyse had offered to accompany him, however the squire had seen the knight injured in more ways than one far too much of late and thus he'd refused her. As well, he'd taken note of the way she'd guarded her arm while tending Korin's stitches, obviously hiding wounds of her own which he preferred she found priority for.
His fingers fumbled at the buckles of his armour as he attempted to climb the stairs to his bedchamber. The ability to force air through his lungs was fast becoming an increasingly difficult feat. Suddenly unable to continue, he closed his eyes and leaned back against the polished stone wall at his side, slowly sliding down its uneven surface, succumbing at last to the consuming agony.
Shallow breaths escaped his lips in faint whispers of impending finality, yet he struggled to maintain his center, focusing his thoughts upon the battle he'd just fought. No matter this night's loss, Myrddin's warriors had been victorious; no matter wounds suffered, strength had seen them through. Failure existed only within the minds of the weak; glory belonged not to those who celebrated arrogance. Stonegate's soldiers had fate on their side and it was fate that would march them to victory. _________________ *Even if you be otherwise perfect, you fail without humility. ~ The Talmud* |
