Scar finished packing the last of his belongings. He had even remembered where he had hidden his stash of armor and weapons near the Shrine of Justice before Kayla had found him. He was wearing that now, all clean and rust-free due to the patient efforts of her gentle, soft, hands. She watched as he closed the knapsack and fastened the buckles to it securely. He turned to look at her and saw the pain in her eyes. "I owe you everything, Kayla. I know I can never repay you for the kindnesses done me. Will it help if I promise you that I will spend my life trying?"

"It will help," she replied, sitting down.

He went to her and clasped her shoulders helping her to rise. "It would be a lie for me to say that I love you the way you want me to. Besides, we live in different worlds. We are... different people. Something I have not told you. I chose this life... the lycanthropy. It is not a curse, it is the source of my strength."

Kayla stepped back. "Chose it? Why would anyone wish to be a lycanthrope? They are monsters!"

He released her and gathered his things. "You cannot understand. My people... friends... we are a different sort. Why I lost my memory remains a mystery to me, but it will return in time. I do know that what I am is what I have chosen to be... and Malas is my home."

He leaned to kiss her but she shied away. "Let us part as friends then, and no more," she said in a wistful tone. "As you say, we are different people."

Scar took her hand and kissed it, bowed low, and left quickly.
