|
I watched Cezanne flee up the stairs in a swirl of skirts and misgiving. The angst in her eyes served her poorly as a facade, revealing the concealment of much left unspoken. This being far from my first such experience, she leaves me confident in the truth that regardless of her acceptance I gave her all any man is capable of giving and certainly all that I, myself, have to offer. Heritage has nothing to do with love. My own father gave his heart to a peasant woman and it was she who gave life to his heir. Ancyous is a gypsy and I love him none the less for that, perhaps even more, for he carries no pretense in his daily stride. And as for my vows, she knows they have since been forsaken. Nonetheless, whatever be the cause of this unfortunate circumstance, I respect her decision and wish her well. May the sun set softly upon the final curtain call of what may have been.
