Tyranthraxus finished the top button of his red, silk shirt and scrutinized his appearance closely in a nearby mirror. He leaned over next to the mirror and picked up a light brown doublet that sat on the small bed that occupied his rented room at the Gentle Rest in New Haven. He put the doublet on and watched himself in the mirror as he fastened each button. He was not used to seeing himself outside his normal attire; Umbrans were not known for a variety of colors in their dress. This assignment was one of deception and disguise, however. One thing Tyranthraxus knew for certain; he looked good.

At first the necromancer had thought that an extended stay abroad from Umbra would prove to be an annoyance. To Tyranthraxus’s surprise, though, he found it very refreshing. Still holding claim to his mortality, he occasionally enjoyed the small things that mortals tend to enjoy: the smell of ocean air, the pleasant bustle of a thriving city, and the inhibition of free folk. Tyranthraxus laughed as these thoughts ran through his mind. Perhaps, he thought, he was growing soft in his old age.

His stay in New Haven was prompted by a request from Iz’rem Verin’Vlos, the ancient appointed to oversee the Scholomance sect of the Order and Tyranthraxus’s superior. The Magus sought a strange substance that formed on the ground on the edges of the Umbran domain and asked that Tyranthraxus assist in collecting a large sample of it. A previous attempt to do so was thwarted by the combined forces of the Sanctans and the Guardians of Stonegate. Tyranthraxus, being ever so accommodating and obedient since his return, obliged the Magus in his request.

To circumvent the chance of another botched caravan, the necromancer decided not to be so overt in his methods. He had heard word of a union of merchants based in the facet of Trammel and decided to put them to use. He had already sent word and met with their representatives once so far. The first meeting went well.

His portrayal of a wealthy Magincian geologist to the Maritime Union during the first meeting was flawless. Assisting him in his ruse was Keaira, the Daughter of Oblivion. She was still as mischievous and cunning as he remembered her to be from his time in Caina. They came to New Haven as Lord Tyran Corvalus and his daughter, Annabelle, and met with Isk and Ellesbeth and of the Maritime Union.

Tyranthraxus ran his hands down over his chest and smoothed his attire out. He now prepared to meet with Isk a second time; he had to provide a corrected location of the samples and increase the amount of gold to be provided in compensation for services. The necromancer laughed inside his head at the irony of his disguise; he was not deceiving the Maritime Union in any way. He would pay as planned and their task was straightforward and true: to gather samples of Entropic Residue. Tyranthraxus instead disguised himself to keep out of sight of another threat: Lord Darrien Church. Interaction with the Maritime Union was outlawed in Umbra and Tyranthraxus would be deemed a traitor if he was found doing so. To Tyranthraxus, that failure was unacceptable.

He was ready. As Tyranthraxus took one last close look in the mirror and an uncharacteristically contented smile poured onto his face. For once the necromancer felt achieved. Perhaps subordination, he thought, would not be that bad.
