Denzin Bracken, the Emperor of Blackmarsh, sat quietly on a stool on the patio of the Blackmarsh Tavern & Inn. His hands rested gently on top of the bar, a half empty bottle of cider in between them. The warm sun radiated the stone patio and warmed the Emperor to the core. A soft breeze swept across the yard and rearranged his fine combed hair.

Gerard Vartan, Warlord of Cove, made his way along the grassy, not yet worn in, streets of Blackmarsh. His eye caught the sight of the Emperor. The Warlord raised a brow of suspicion as he followed the walk way to the doors of the Tavern & Inn. It wasn’t long until he emerged onto the patio, a bottle of ale in hand. Without a word, he sat on the empty stool next to the Emperor. He took a long, refreshing sip of his ale, and then placed it on the bar in front of him.

“Evening, Emperor.” Gerard said sternly. “I’m surprised to find you mingling with simple citizens.” He smirked.

“Not quite mingling when you’re alone, Lord Vartan.” Emperor Bracken replied softly.

A brief, barely visible smile, curled across Gerard’s lips at the sound of “Lord”.

“Joke or no joke, I was once a simple citizen myself. It wasn’t long ago that I drank with the Warlords of our vast Empire, while you were rough-tough mercenaries.” Bracken smiled.

“Aye, this is true.” Gerard replied, taking another long sip of his ale.

“What brings you from Cove?” Bracken asked, turning slightly to his left and leaning against his right arm that was pressed against the bar.

Gerard shrugged softly and turned slightly to his right to face the Emperor. “Things are going well, so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to venture to our capital.”

Denzin nodded while turning to lift the bottle of cider to his lips. He took a short sip and replaced it to its original spot. He turned to face Gerard once again.

“It seems that each of the Empires Cities is managing quite wonderfully. My brother, Dale, says that he’s had nothing but cooperation and organization from the citizens of Nujelm. I haven’t heard from Orelen lately, as he tends to keep himself busy, but Britain seems to be doing glorious. And Cal has informed me that Yew is well fortified, of course criminals will always find battles with each other there, and the citizens have never felt safer.” Bracken smiled.

Gerard nodded a bit. “I hear war is upon us?”

Bracken chuckled and shrugged slightly. “I’m not sure whether I’d call it war or not. I merely gave the go ahead to Hurst to attack Tokuno now and again, to show them that it wasn’t a joke when I asked their Soke to keep spies from entering my capital City.”

“Well, Sarian told me that the Wolf King sent a pretty nasty letter.” Gerard said, taking a sip from his ale.

“Oh. Aye, he did. I can’t say that I blame him. Aye, some of his words were harsh and unnecessary, however at the time and in his situation, I can’t say I wouldn’t have done the same. His soldiers were attacked and harmed in the cross fire of our joined attack. That’s enough to be upset about, let alone the attack against Tokuno was alongside sworn enemies of the Wolf Kings Kingdom. The letter he sent me was more or less to show that he is just as unforgiving as we are, when our own are harmed.” Bracken said full heartedly.

“I do not doubt that battles will take place due to the result of a hand full of Kingdoms and Empires. However, we can only take them in stride. I don’t think a major war of importance will erupt. Merely battles of distaste for one another at that time and place. A year from now, I can almost guarantee none of this will have mattered.” Bracken turned and took a long sip of his cider, draining the bottle. He placed it back on the bar and pushed himself back to stand.

“None the less, we shouldn’t take this too lightly.” Gerard replied to the Emperors words.

“Nor we will, Warlord.” Emperor Bracken said. He patted Gerard on the shoulder and made his way to the door of the Tavern & Inn.
