Sularis sifted through the rubble. The house was utterly destroyed. The foundation was cracked, most of the support structures were unsound. Removing the things he was ordered to retrieve had been precarious. If not for his wings and his presdigious strength, he would have either fallen to his death or been crushed under fallen timbers and stones.

Dealthagar had insisted. there were too many treasures in the upper floors to let them be destroyed.

"But what of the lab?"

"Other than the racks of samples, I don't care. Everything there is replacable or worthless. Retrieve the relics first. The samples as well."

Portions of the floor had collapsed, and ancient technomantic devices lay smashed to bits under the rubble. The lab was a complete loss, or at least it was in Sularis' eyes. He found the stone sarcophogus embedded in the floor and retrieves the samples Dealthagar had spent years gathering, each clearly and distintly marked. It was like looking at a historical document of who's who in Sosaria. Some were expected, old companions, former lovers, apprentices, students, cohorts and others that had drifted into and out of his master's inner circle over the years. The second row represented his greatest foes, enemies and rivals. Names that were used to scare children into behaving, or give them somone to imitate. Knights, kings, mages, necromancers, daemons and monsters, all neatly lined up and labeled.

The third row sent a chill up Sularis's spine. Each was labeled as "Dealthagar" and had a date, as well as a band marked with amll dots, tiny symbols and colored marks. He recognized it as his master's method of cataloging shorthand, but typically most things didn't require more than four or five marks. some of the latest samples had dozens. Scores. The last few had so many marks, additional labels had been added to the vials. How far removed was he? How far had he ppushed his art?

Sularis closed the box and tucked it away. Looking over the lab, he flew up through the hole in the cieling. The building was a loss, but Dealthagar said he had plans for the space. More labor, more to do. The work for his master was never ending.

But there was always a plan.
