Thraxas's letter to the Presidium members was more than an attempt to boost morale, it was a means to divert attention away from the stinging and revealing reply of the Lich Lord's response to Isk's letter. Isk's slip in referring to him as his brother, Thrax, was duplicated by the Lich Lord in his letter, thereby giving him an out as to the information that he was a follower of a dark and chaotic deity. That was something he naturally did not want universally known. So, should it come up, he intended to laugh it off as merely a blunder: the Lich Lord was confusing him, Thraxas, with his twin, Thrax, who had indeed been a devotee of Oggaroth. He would even go as far as to declare that his ultimate break from his brother was due to the nature of his brother's horrific religion and his own inability to stomach it. That was easy enough.
Yet he remained uncertain as to the exact nature of the reply. Did the Lich Lord not know that it was his intent all along to bring down the Protectorate, so that those who stood in total opposition to Umbra might be lessened? Did he really believe that, far from being one who desired Umbra to succeed, Church thought him a false friend despite the fact that he had just helped accomplish that monumental and historic task, by splitting away to form the Union? Or was this the Lich Lord's way of publicly distancing himself from Thraxas, so that attention could be drawn away, leaving them to continue to hatch dire plots in secret?
He had two choices: he could visit Umbra yet again to seek a meeting with Church, or else he could wait until, and if, the Lich Lord contacted him for a meeting. If Church's misgivings and mistrust against him were true, then likely he would be slain on the spot if he appeared in Umbra, before he even had a chance to explain his plans. He could send his doppleganger, but if discovered, that would make his treachery appear even worse. No, he would wait to see if the Lich Lord sent word to him in some fashion to discuss their future together. If so, well and good. If not, then he knew that he had performed his task only too well, fooling even the usually wise and treacherous One himself... and he would have to proceed alone along the dark path he had chosen. _________________ "If a criminal has what you want, you do business with him." |
