|
Sounds rather lame, and yeah it's a direct ripoff of the Olympics themselves. But has anyone tried to do anything like this before? I was having trouble sleeping last night and this idea came to me. Let me throw it out for public scrutiny and see what you guys think.
====
SOSARIAN OLYMPICS
Each nation/guild is allowed to compete in any event that they choose, submitting at most two teams per event. There will be points awarded for the top three winners. First place receives four points. Second place receives two points. Third place receives one point. The points will be tallied after every event is finished to determine the all-around winner of the Sosarian Olympics. The events are as follows:
1. Foot race (location TBA): One v One foot races within the Luna Bagball Field
2. Boat race (location TBA): Two man boat teams, two teams at a time. One captain, one mage. Mage tries to wall of stone other boats.
3. 2v2 Combat: Two v Two combat inside an arena
4. Joust: Self-explanatory
5. Archery Contest: One v One archery tournament. Three shots per round on archery buttes
6. Bagball Games: Self-explanatory
Each event will happen one day at a time over the span of a month. The events will take place on either Sunday or Monday (potentially taking the place of tavern night for two weeks time?), or both. Winners of the events will be given medals or other symbols of honor for their event. The nation/guild that has the most points at the end of the Olympics receives only bragging rights.
This event will happen only twice a year, over a couple week span.
====
Thoughts? I want to add more events, but I want them to be practical as well. I want it to be fun and have there be atleast one event that 90% of the community can participate in and enjoy themselves. _________________

The success of this bigger event pends on the activity of as many guilds as possible. So while I appreciate the thumbs up Cein (trust me I do!), I'm also looking for feedback and what it would take you as a person, and you all as a guild, to participate. _________________

Ahh well. In that case, it depends. It'll be IC, right?
Off the top of my head-
Maybe some kind of choreographed guild dance/marching formation that will be judged based on synchronization, style, and originality.
Edit to add- I really don't know for sure if OES is the type to send a guild to an olympic event to represent the nation. Sometimes individuals, but not sure about a team hehe. |

Can we have hockey?
On a serious note, you have something figured out for medals?
On a third... the creator of the English language was a cruel person for word pairings like medal/metal. :/ _________________ "Detached reflection cannot be demanded in the presence of an uplifted knife."

I don't know what it would take to get me to personally participate, but I would definitely watch the events (I am always more of a spectator anyways). Though I am sure these events would be held on a day and time when I am at work, so I probably wouldn't get to see them anyways Hopefully someone can record the play-by-play and post it! _________________ Sometimes you must lose yourself before you can find yourself. |

OES might not send a team, but I could see Ariana try and pull a team together to represent Umbra. This idea has been done before on other shards, not sure about Atlantic. Its a nifty idea if you can pull it off. Personally, I'd open it to all guilds, not just those who rp. Be a great advertising opportunity for rp.
Ideas:
Do it only once a year and alternate each year between summer and winter. (that way folks - staff or participants- don't get burnt out)
There is what is called a statuette engraving tool - you could engrave some with "1st place Summer Olympics - Running", etc. I want to say these worked on the crafted masonry statues. Don't use the standard gold, silver, bronze though - make the color rank true to uo. Valorite, etc
Winter event idea - Figure skating. Make a rink with three of the icy patches on it... imagine a rectangle with them in a line-spaced out - in the middle. The skater has their own routine and skate around the ice emoting whatever and avoiding the icy patches. They however have to make x amount of emoted jumps which are timed with running across the icy patches. The result of contact with the icy patch is the result of that jump - they can either land strong, shaky or fall on their ass. Contestants are judged on Creativity (emotes/description/routine), Appearance (costume/outfit) and Technique (How they did on the jumps).
Winter Event Idea - Speed skating. Make a line or two of icy patches across a ring of ice. Skaters have to run over the ice patches as they make x number of laps. Winner is first to complete the race.
Winter Event Idea - Hockey? Put Bagball on ice with icy patches.
Summer Event Idea - Horse racing.
Summer Event - Jumping - You make the design so there is a line where they "jump" and a rectangle of space that they are judged on distance. Have a hidden teleporter at the line and have the -same type- of teleporter covering the rectangle and hidden by gozas. When you teleport off at the jump point, it should choose randomly where you end up among all teleporters of the same kind. This event could be modified probably for ski jumps as well.
I think that's all my brain can muster up at the moment. I had planned to use a couple of them for some future events, but no reason you can't use them for the games as well. Hope that helps. *goes to find caffeine* _________________

I like those ideas, Ariana. The only thing that potentially shows a problem is the PvP/Jousting events when it comes to non roleplay guilds. Will have to think more on that.
Once a year does sound good though, as this will take a lot of planning and such to do, but I'd really like to pull it off. Alternating with winter/summer sounds good as well. I'm going to work on this a lot over spring break and get a lot of the events hammered out and such. The first one will be held in Spring, so it will be summerish activities. The next one will be held the following winter, with the ideas you had for the winter ones. _________________

I disagree with both of you. I personally think you could get away with a summer and winter olympic each year. It's once every six months for a couple weeks. I -really- don't think people would get burnt out. Plus.. I'd personally enjoy training rply for 6 months for boat races and rubbish like that. I think once a year rotating is far too long for the UO world. It wouldn't take -that- much training. A representitive from each guild can collect together once a month for six months to plan it. Wouldn't be an issue.
While I like your idea of advertising Ariana, I think we should keep it closed off to RP only. However, I think we should do it in public and advertise on Stratics, HOT boards, what have you to bring in spectators. It may even be a cool idea to involve the whole shard. But..doing that would be FAR FAR MORE work than keeping it RP.
Other than that, I think it's a great idea. _________________ Brianha ‎(10:04 PM):

Don't they have summer events for horseses? Could do... *thinks* what's that really dumb game where people dress up like jockeys and use crochet clubs on horseback?
Don't forget about our friend Speed Healing, Magical Mismatch and Potion Making! *chuckles* We could really make up any number of games that are 1) fun and 2) challenging somewhat.
Anywho, if you need any help, please let me know. *zips away to learn about strict liability* _________________ "Detached reflection cannot be demanded in the presence of an uplifted knife."

We can use the empty floor in the Library to house pedestals with guild/people etc who win each event/medal per olympic games. |

Actually we discussed something similar at the RCL meeting. We would be happy to help and share ideas. _________________ Grand Duchess Molly Kaldhel
