|
At the request of her superior, Gerard Vartan, Kali was out patrolling Cove. As a soldier of Blackmarsh, it was her job to make sure that the citizens were at peace. She was a skillfully trained Ninja and an excellent archer. Cloaked in silence she walked among the shadows... secretly hoping to find trouble.
It had been a long day... the only action she had seen was helping to find a lost child, who turned up hiding in a nearby tree. As her shift was coming to a close... Kali saw what looked to be a band of Brigands. These however, were not your everyday Brigands. Typically, these trouble makers were unskilled in weaponry and poorly protected in their peasant's clothing. This particular group of Brigands were wearing heavy armor and were just as heavily armed. There were 4 of them. All carrying their weapons as skilled warriors would.
As she watched from the shadows... it was clear they weren't in Cove for a garden party. Kali sprang into action and took out the one who appeared to be their leader. Before she could do anymore damage... she was ambushed from behind. How could this be? She had counted 4 men and now 2 more held her captive. Kali cried out in both fear and pain as one man held her tight and the other brought his knife point to her throat.
They pulled back the hood of her cloak. "A woman!? And a pretty one at that..." said the first man.
"Shame we have to kill her. Perhaps we have a bit of fun first?" replied the second.
They ripped open her cloak revealing her warriors armor. Kali kicked and screamed as the man with the knife drew closer to her face. As they held her down for her impending torture... she remembered a conversation from the night before, with Orelen, in the Blackmarsh Tavern. He told her that in the end... her lifestyle of bitterness and revenge would only bring her pain and loneliness. Was he right? Was this the end?
Suddenly, Gerard swept in. He thrust his leaf blade into the bowels Kali's armed attacker and tossed him to the ground like a rag doll. The second attacker released Kali and ran. Gerard watched as the remaining Brigands mounted up and rode off towards Vesper in the east.
Once he was sure the area was secure, he turned to Kali. She sat with her knees to her chest... rocking back and forth like a child. "Kali... are you ok?" He asked her.
She looked up up at him with her tear stained face. "I am now."
Gerard extended his hand to her and helped her up. She liked the way her hand felt in his. He pulled her close and embraced her. "You were quite brave to try and take on all of those Brigands."
"It's my duty as a soldier of Blackmarsh." She replied.
And as he held her there on the roadside... she knew that Orelen was wrong. She wouldn't be alone. |
