Ladron stood in the doorway to his brother’s room at the Serpents Hold Inn, watching him retrieve his gear from a footlocker at the end of the bed. As Kinn fastened an endless variety of weapons to his body, Ladron felt a mixture of concern and pride as he watched his brother prepare for his evening outing.

I wonder, brother, what exactly did that letter say that causes you to finally venture out after all these months of seclusion? Ladron said, attempting to mask the concern in his voice.

Kinn only lookup up briefly and then continued his well-rehearsed preparation process, answering his brother while he worked.

Alaundril wrote some strange things. The message was both confusing and cryptic. He spoke of “Our Lord” and “The Masked One”. It was strange, even for him. I get the feeling that something is very wrong.

Ladron could not help but laugh.

You’ve been saying that about everything I’ve told you! Every piece of information I delivered seemed “wrong” to you. And yet, you know what I’ve said is true! Old alliances have faltered and new ones have formed, no matter how unlikely you believe it. You must accept things as they are now, not as you wish they could be!

Kinn sighed. He strapped the last poison dagger in place and rechecked the smoke bomb pouch for the third time. He stood up and grabbed the hooded cloak that his brother had infused with protective death magic.

Yes, brother, I know…I know. I hope to get some answers tonight.

So you’ll visit Alaundril then? Ladron asked.

Yes, and the Matron. Kinn replied. And possibly even Stonegate, if there is time. I need information, brother, and I need it from the sources who would know.

With that, Kinn grabbed his mission pack and pushed past his brother out into the main hall of the inn. He gave one final nod to Ladron and then vanished into the shadows, intent on finding answers to the ever-growing list of questions forming in his mind.
