Star Trek Online dropped today. Did anyone get it? I'm eyeballing it. |

I've heard it's very, very generic. There's nothing even notable about it to make fun of, it's just a generic MMO.
Edit: My brother just asked for a fast review on it too, so I asked my friend who played it who said this:
(regarding how STO compares to EVE) Totally different. STO is traditional + rubbish MMO on the ground, and traditional MMO-ish gameplay in "space" which you might as well just say is like playing WoW's swimming areas. Well, I should add that WoW's swimming areas are far more fun and polished.
It's apparently very grindy and the universe is very small from the complaints on the forums. Like Champions Online where there's only enough content for the first couple days. Coincidentally made by the same company. |

In STO's defense, both Eve and Wow have had 100s of gigs of content added and they are venerable when it comes to other MMOS.
STO came out yesterday. From what I saw, I was pleased. And as far as "generic" I can't really agree with that after giving it a spin last night. It's definitely Star Trek.
EDIT: I'd also like to add that I've played MMO's for years and I've never seen anything like the "space battles" and the aspect of customizing and modifying your ship to suit your (selectable) bridge crew and your skills. All of which are leveled as you go through the game. It sounds like your friend played the Beta to me.
But then again, I hate WOW so go figure. |

I never have high hopes for games that are themed after movies or TV shows. This includes MMORPGs.
EDIT: Fixed image. Sorry, I forgot people on the internet get butthurt over ~500kb of transfer.

Falling into holes you cant get out of and getting chased by scientists in the glitchiest repeating screen level makes not only an incredible suck but inadvertently creates great fun for internet critics of today. |

Ah, come on Kuj. That was a classic. It set a standard that few have even come close to! The closest I played that came even close to it was Barbie for NES

Cryptic just let go another community professional. That leaves them with a grand total of one, at the "representative" rather than "manager" level, for about 3 MMO's.
I would avoid Star Trek Online like the plague. Cryptic refuses to learn from the repeat mistakes of their previous games, opting not to iterate on design but rather re-skin it. I beta tested STO briefly, and they shove you in a Miranda-class starship for a solid 20 hours of gameplay - you start to go mad. _________________
