An official letter from the Lord Regent arrives for Mayor Bracken:

"Honorable Sir,

I am Thraxas, Lord Regent of Yew. King Sid appointed me to this position and gave me full authority to handle all matters that pertain to Yew, on both facets. Some weeks ago, you directly approached him about the matter of Yew, Felucca, and he came to a decision about it. I was perplexed by this, but he assured me it was necessary since at the time, I was not present at the meeting where you raised the question. I wish for you to deal with me in this matter from this point onward.

First, I must congratulate your forces on their victories in the field. This last effort on our part was very haphazard and poorly organized. And it did not help to be outnumbered by hardened, seasoned, warriors as were we. Nevertheless, the victor's laurels go to you and your allies, and thence should the spoils.

It is for that reason, among others, that I will meet with you in truce to negotiate the surrender of the remaining districts in Yew, Felucca, to Blackmarsh. I see no good reason to continue a battle that I believe we have no hope of winning.

The King would never agree to this himself. He would not do it to save face and for honor's sake. By my acting in this manner, I shall relieve him of that insurmountable, personal, burden and take upon myself all the shame and ignominy that may go with it. If he wishes to continue the fight, then he will disavow my decision and render my authority, void. I do not believe he will do that... but we shall see. I am prepared to accept the consequences.

In the meantime, please meet with me at Covenant Castle, at your earliest convenience. Bring whatever guards you deem necessary, but they shall not be needed. For myself, I will meet you alone, as a sign of good faith.

I look forward to your reply.

In Sincerity,

Thraxas
Lord Regent of Yew"

Denzin read the letter over carefully before sending a returning letter.

Dear Regent Thraxas,

I'm pleased to hear this. However, there is one part of your letter that has me wondering. When you claim that Sid has the ability to void your authority and disavow your decision, well that just doesn't make sense to me. If you have the authority to surrender the lands, then that decision should be final.

We can speak about this when we meet.

This evening should work fine.

Until then,
Sincerely,

Denzin Bracken
Mayor of Blackmarsh

Thraxas read the reply and gave an approving nod. He then ordered his chef to prepare a few house delicacies and to select the best Yew wines for a brief repast, as he expected the meeting to be a rather long one.
