|
A copy of the following letter has been passed to the respective addressees by courier:
"Your Majesty, and Lord Regent,
Since the recent battle for the district of Yew which borders Alderglen, it has come to my attention, from reliable sources, that both undead and demons were employed by you in that battle.
While I sympathized with you against the aggressors and promised support and loyalty, I did not know beforehand that you had sought, much less employed, such allies.
As you both know, or should know, I am a paladin of the goddess Quaestra Concordia, a benign deity who abhors unnatural, violently aggressive and vile creatures. Undead, orcs, and daemons rank highly among them. I cannot, therefore, condone such tactics. Nor can I align myself with any entity which employs them, or treats them as equals worthy of respect.
I know you did this out of desperation to retain your land, but as long as you do this, and do not repent of this misdeed, I will not, nor shall Alderglen, support you. I am deeply saddened by this unholy alliance and misguided compromise with the powers of darkness. Honor demands that we uphold our principles above all else. It appears you have placed the interests of your rule at the expense of them, not to mention the lives of those who fight and die for you. It is my fervent hope that you will realize your error and return to the way of Light and Honor.
In the event that this moves you to retaliation against me and/or Alderglen, please know that any retribution will force us from a neutral stance into one of active participation in the forces aligned against you, assisting them as we may, fighting at their side, and procuring their aid.
There is still time to avert this calamity and loss of face: renounce the use of such allies and consider the request for compromise. Yew, Felucca, does need wise, capable, and devoted government. At present, that is sorely lacking.
Bowing to the inevitable, I hereby resign as Sheriff of Yew. I shall henceforth concern myself only with the management of my estate.
Sincerely,
Itannar Darkanor

Upon reading the missive, Thraxas went into one of his now rare, uncontrollable, rages. When he was finished, he had to wait for Jarvis the barkeep to return to the castle to clean up the mess, as he had fled far into the woods outside to hide.
Within the hour, the Lord Regent had calmed enough to pen a reply and send it by courier to Itannar:
"Archon,
(As you now style yourself) I consider your act beneath contempt. Clearly you have bowed to pressure from the opposition who have somehow convinced you of their "concern" for the welfare of Yew, Felucca. You are a coward and a traitor, but even more so a dotard, if you believe their stories. If you had the courage to have told me this to my face, I would have killed you myself, on the spot and put you out of your obvious misery. But killing is too good for you.
I think your goddess is a sham and a pathetic excuse for religion. I will remove all vestiges of worship to her from the castle. If you ever show your face around here again, rest assured you will rue the day.
May you and yours be accursed,
Thraxas
Lord Regent of Yew" _________________ "If a criminal has what you want, you do business with him." |
