She stood and watched as portal after portal opened on the front lawn, as the more powerful gypsy arcanists hurried family both by blood and by marriage away from Minoc.
How horrible it was, to see these near and distant cousins displaced from their humble but tight-knit homes--the eyes of young and old alike haunted with the age old fear. Merrique knew better than to fall for any shoddy story of wolf or lycan; this was indeed the work of a crazed or sloppy vampire. Merrique understood there was a symbiosis of sorts that dictated sharing the worlds, and also understood that certain types of behavior were acceptable as well as not among the breeds.
Yes, she thought to herself, This must be addressed. For how long have I made my home on the darker side, and never witnessed such brazen disregard for one's own kind? This can lead to no good.
Rapidly, the pity and sadness rolled over in Merrique's gut and turned to rage. A dangerous, simmering anger that would be extinguished by nothing short of remuneration. _________________
. . . But the dark is very trustworthy.
It's always as dark as you thought it was.
And you don't have to work at staying there.
All you have to do is survive it.
And I've been doing that forever.
