The wraith appeared just outside Covenant Castle and cast a spell. The undead form vanished, leaving a red-haired, red-beared and mustachioed man standing where it had been; the identical twin of his master, Thraxas. The doppleganger Nergal-dregg brushed itself off and entered the building. It ascended the stairs and stood before the Regent, waiting for him to speak.
Thraxas acknowledged his presence with a nod. "A very interesting conversation, Nergal. I hope the link did not give you too much of a headache?" Regent Thraxas commented, though he was not the least concerned about his minion's pain.
"No, sire. I am used to it. What do you think about his offer?"
Thraxas scowled. "Do not concern yourself with my business, shapeshifter! Continue to do well and perhaps I shall allow you to visit your kin more often... more freedoms as well."
Nergal-dregg bowed low. "Your graciousness exceeds my worth, lord."
"I know," Thraxas quipped, turning his gaze back to the papers on his desk. "Leave me now. I must consider all that I have heard today and make a decision."
The doppleganger exited.
Thraxas rose from his dais and went outside. The sun was setting and Felucca was visible high above it. He walked to a pentagram and was teleported to the area above the castle, which he kept hidden from view from below... the place of many sacrifices to his god. He sat down on the bone throne.
"What would you have me do, lord?" He spoke out loud.
Oggaroth's reply was swift, but painless this time. "What will gain you that which you seek?"
"I seek vengeance against humanity. I tire of these charades and costumes."
"Then you have your answer."
"Reveal myself? I have no army, few followers. Likely the King would turn against me as would practically every nation that exists..."
"What you may stand to lose, may be gained from other quarters. You must decide who has done the greatest offence to you and destroy them. All this intrigue and plotting is for nothing if you fail in your aims, and so far you have failed."
"So you remind me! Could you not for once just tell me what direction to take? Must you continually reply in cryptic riddles? WHAT SHOULD I DO??"
"DO what you came to do! BE what you are! You may be surprised by what happens then."
Thraxas sighed and stroked his goatee, gazing out into the dim light of the waning sunset, his troubled mind stirring like waves in a storm-tossed sea. _________________ "If a criminal has what you want, you do business with him." |
