Scar had just arrived in Stonegate when Thraxas' raven courier found him and delivered this note:

"Friend Scar,

I must see you at once! Come with all haste to the Castle!

Thraxas"

He spoke the words of the Sacred Journey spell and returned home. He found Thraxas waiting for him at the entrance. The look on his face spoke volumes. Scar dismounted and dispelled his ethereal Cu Sidhe. "What is the trouble?"

Thraxas took a deep breath before he said anything. "Are you aware that Stonegate has allied itself with the Blackmarsh mercenaries who mean to invade Yew?"

Scar was momentarily stunned. "Who told you this?!"

"You know I have my sources, and they are quite reliable. But I don't need them. A copy of a pact they made with Blue Lotus, an alliance with the Mercenaries, is apparently displayed in their own headquarters. You mean to tell me you were not aware of this?" Thraxas seemed truly surprised.

"No... I knew there was some kind of pact, but not the extent of it. I thought it was for mutual defense primarily... or to band together to subdue Umbra and Luna."

"Well, the truth is, the Wolf King, and likely Empress Miko, will be invading Yew this day at the side of the mercenaries. They mean to lay claim to all of it in Felucca." Thraxas paused to let that sink in. "So my friend... my brother's dearest friend... where do *you* stand on this?"

Scar's lowered his head; his mind reeling. He tried to think of what possible use Yew could be to Stonegate... unless it was to pacify allies in a treaty... or flex its muscle. Waging war on vile Umbra or bringing order to corrupt Luna was one thing, but assaulting a land so far removed, so unimportant politically and economically stable as Yew, was, in his mind, quite another. "I stand alone, I suppose," he muttered at last.

"What do you mean?"

"I can not... will not... lift my hand against my clan... but nor can I wage an unjustifiable war simply to honor a treaty with mercenaries."

Thraxas was not humored. "I expected more from you, Scar. We have long been friends. I have given you a home; you have shared my generosity and eaten from my table; I indulged your promiscuous flings with Yew women you have brought here many times... and would have done much more. And all I can get from you is... neutrality?"

"I can do no more."

"Then I want you out of here. You have three days to find a new home. Return to the land of your wolf clan, if they will have you. When they hear what I have heard, you will be fortunate if they do not tear you to pieces. Neutrality has no place in this world, Scar, and you had best soon learn it!" His eyes blazed red briefly and he clenched his fists. The words of a fiery spell crossed his mind, but he did not speak them. He simply turned and stormed away, back into the castle, slamming the doors behind him.

Scar sat down on the front steps. Off in the distance he heard the baleful howl of a wolf.

A soft whisper echoed thru the wolfs howl..

Scar come home to your people... come home to your clan... Not all is as it seems.

Scar rose quickly, his spirit revived though his curiosity remained unslaked. He prepared to leave. His things could wait; he would send for them later. Where she led him, he would follow; when she called, he answered.
