The great eagle circled high above Covenant Castle for a few moments, then drifted slowly down to finally perch atop a parapet. Thraxas, sitting in his room, noticed the bird and went outside to determine its intent. Tied to one of its legs was a message cylinder. The creature fixed its gaze upon him as he approached, but allowed him to remove it. Thraxas took the message inside as the bird lifted from its perch and flew away.
Thraxas unscrolled the parchment and read the brief note silently:
"Lord Regent of Yew,
Urgent! Send any available forces to Sanctus at once! Imminent attack by orcs and undead probable. Fulfill your duty to the Protectorate and aid us in our time of need. - Lord Malic"
Thraxas rolled up the note and sent it by Harbinger, his courier raven, with one of his own to his Archwarden.
Sitting in his own study, Archwarden Itannar heard the familiar squawk of the giant raven which provided only seconds' warning as it alighted on the window sill a few feet from him. He arose and removed the cylinder it carried. "What might this be?" he asked himself as he opened it to read the message:
"Archwarden,
This note came to me mere moments ago. Do what you can to aid our allies. - Lord Regent Thraxas"
Itannar read the other note and tossed it and the cylinder aside. He placed some of his extra weapons into a chest, donned his best armor and hurried as quickly as he could to Hanses' Hostel in Sanctus.
When he arrived he saw the street deserted and hurried toward Blackguard Castle. He entered but was thwarted by a maze of passageways and a sentry who demanded his identity and purpose. "I am Itannar of Yew, Archwarden to the Regent of Yew, Thraxas," he replied. "I came to offer my aid to you."
He was permitted to proceed and was led to a defensive station within the Castle.
It wasn't long until the host of orcs and undead arrived and attempted to enter it. The sounds of fighting were intense, within and without; as poison and barrier fields hummed, bombs exploded and blades clashed. When it appeared that the intruders would not, or refused, to penetrate the castle, the order was given to attack them outside. The battle was a typically confused affair; bolas dismounted foes, formidable lesser Hiryus aided their masters in the attacks; orcs, undead, and men went at each other with vicious intensity. An orc brute stood at the entrance to the Castle, appearing to be confused about whom to attack, so Itannar obliged him. The brute went down with a crash. A few arrows hit the aged ranger and he sparred momentarily with an orc, but few remained in any one place for long. In the end, the valiant Sanctans, with the timely and gracious help of the deadly Blue Lotus Clan ninjas, and a lone ranger of Yew, overcame the enemy, thwarting the attack.
Itannar, tired, wounded, weary, and very amazed that he survived, stood alongside the other warriors as Vian Skyfire addressed them, thanking them all for their courage, skill, and tenacity.
The ranger spent a few hours in the tavern speaking with several Sanctan soldiers, and with Vian, and sharing an ale or two. Then he returned home to tend his wounds and report to his superior. _________________ -The bonds of fellowship are forged in the flames of adversity- |
