Thraxas sent criers to the banks to make sure everyone who stopped at one would be reminded that the Open House would be today.

"So, how did it go?" Thraxas asked his Archwarden as he entered the Academy late, the evening of the Open House.

Itannar looked up from his desk and stood up, provided the customary bow, and then sat back down. An unhappy, somewhat disgusted look crossed his aged face. He folded his hands on the table and shook his head. "Not so good. Not nearly what I had expected and hoped for."

Without being bidden, Thraxas sat down opposite him. "Oh? How many came?"

Itannar sighed. "One person."

Thraxas had to try hard to stifle an outburst of laughter. He did let slip a small smirk. "Really?! Who was it?"

"Someone named Black Swan... a dark elf I think. Female."

"Drow?"

"Not sure. She was very kind and complimentary, so I don't know. I gave her two of the door prizes. Tried to give her all but she refused. I was greatly impressed by her."

Thraxas crossed his leg. "I told you so. Your dream is a noble one my ranger friend, but so many are fearful of venturing into Felucca, and not a few despise me or the reputation of my brother. Perhaps you should reconsider this venture? Make yourself a golden palace instead; a place to relax and enjoy the fruits of your hard-earned labors?"

Itannar shook his head. "It was only an Open House. The teachers were not here. Perhaps if I had invited them specifically we would have had a better turnout. I will wait until enrollment begins before making any decisions about the school."

Thraxas nodded. "A good idea. I am sure the Magnate will draw a fine crowd. His class begins..."

"This Saturday eve at 8:30 p.m.," Itannar finished the sentence.

The Regent of Yew stood up. "Well, I should be going. I have plans of my own this next month. I hope yours will bear fruit." He bowed slightly and headed for the door.

"So do I. We shall see," Itannar muttered to himself.

Black Swan had taken note of the posting of an Open House at an Academy in the old lands, and entered the date and time in her calendar. Wearing a dark robe and carrying a tome of common magic spells, she mounted her steed, Phoenix, and headed to Goodmans. There she located the rune that would take her to the Academy Of Alderglen.

She had not visited the dark lands in ages, and was unsure of what might lay in wait when she arrived. Dismounting her steed, she heard a soft chime (reminicent of an aged school bell) which notified her that her arrival had been noted, and that she might enter and leave at will.

There were three doors in the entryway, and choosing the one directly in front of her, she found herself in a well-lighted, orderly and extremely well-equipped classroom. Within minutes she was greeted by the caretaker and escorted to the registration station, it being clear that there were no visitors as yet other than herself.

The Archwarden arrived almost immediately, introductions were exchanged, and after a drink and some food, Black Swan was given a tour of the facility. He was not young, nor truly old, but had the bearing of one with great experience. dignity and intellect. He questioned her regarding her interests and experience, which she managed to gracefully avoid revealing (she hoped); preferring to keep her identity quiet for the present.

Following a rather lengthy and interesting conversation (noting the obvious lack of other guests) he offered her the prizes which had been prepared for the evening. She at first declined, suggesting that he might find use for them during the ensuing classes, but finally agreed to accept two of the three offered. The choices of prizes were most appropriate, tasteful and valuable.

"Well done," she thought as she bid him farewell.

"Interesting evening," she later wrote in her diary, "I shall attend these classes, and attempt to gather the measure of each of these learned individuals, that I may know my enemies, or perhaps friends, better than they know themselves."

"And perhaps, they shall later know me." Her fingers moved slowly across the leather-bound book, rendering it invisible.
