In a quiet forest clearing, deep in the woods north of Britain, the faint buzzing sound of a shuriken cutting through the air breaks the otherwise tranquil silence.
The shuriken hits its intended target with unerring accuracy and the orc that intruded on Kinn’s meditation begins to spasm with pain.
Kinn smiles as the effects of the poison are immediately evident.
..and that is why I only use the best poisons money can buy…. Kinn thinks to himself.
He springs to his feet from his seated meditation position and draws his Kryss and dagger simultaneously before his feet touch the ground.
The wayward orc raises his club in a futile gesture of aggression, but the poison was already taking a heavy toll on his body.
“I should let you suffer.” Kinn says to the creature. “The poison will give you a slow, painful death.”
He quickly chastises himself. His words betray his emotions and even emotions like hatred or disgust (both of which Kinn felt for the orc) are signs of weakness that should never be shown to an enemy. This was not one of the Lich’s orcs (it was smaller and clearly did not possess the organization and intelligence the Lich’s orcs displayed), but after what Kinn had seen in the Sanctan lands last night every orc was now a hated enemy.
Still, Kinn prided himself on being a dispassionate professional. Observe without feeling, kill without emotion.—those were the hallmarks of one who succeeded in his unique line of work.
In a split second Kinn crosses the distance between him and the already nearly-dead orc and runs it through with his Kryss. The parasitic poison that coats the Kryss transfers a little bit of the creature’s remaining life force into Kinn and he smiles as he suddenly feels a jolt of refreshing energy.
The orc dies.
Not far away Kinn hears a wolf howl. Normally, he would not have paid much attention, but this time the wolf cry makes Kinn smile.
As he turns to leave Kinn catches a glimpse of the wolf as it pads quietly through the trees. Kinn swears the wolf looks strangely satisfied. |
