“Are you absolutely sure?” Ladron was standing now. The news his brother had brought him was more than enough to get him out of his chair.
“Yes, brother,” Kinn replied in his typically cool and emotionless manner, “It is apparently well known around Stonegate. They do not try to hide the fact that their leader and at least one of their elders are lycans.”
Kinn casually picked up one of his brother’s dusty books from his desk and began leafing through the pages, not really reading anything.
“How many of them are there? How many Lycans?!” Ladron demanded.
Kinn only shrugged nonchalantly and closed the book he was pretending to read.
“I do not know, exactly.” Kinn replied with a sigh. “I overheard Merci talking about her “gift”. She was quite proud of it, actually. I heard her mention their Wolf King and I’ve seen this…Myrddin…myself, but only in his human form. Then there was some talk about one who had only recently become one of them. I have not yet uncovered all the details.”
“So that is at least three then?” Ladron rubbed his chin in thought for a moment.
“If you are confirming the existence of at least three lycans then this is a most important discovery, brother.” Ladron was pacing with excitement now.
Kinn should have known better than to be surprised, but still he could not help but wonder why Lycans were such an exciting subject for his brother.
“What do these Lycans mean to you?” he finally asked.
“Do you not see, brother?” Ladron replied excitedly. “The ancient lore tells stories about lycans. They are said to possess vast physical power and heightened senses. They also have an innate connection with wolf creatures. It is not unlike the connection my dark wolf familiar affords me when I summon him. I would simply like to know more about them.”
“Ahh.” Kinn replied with a sarcastic smile on his face. “You hope to discover the source of their power, then?”
Ladron only grinned wickedly. His brother knew him well.
“You don’t need me to spy for you, just visit them. As far as I can tell they would likely tell you all you want to know.” Kinn told his brother as he turned to leave the study. He stopped before leaving and looked over his shoulder.
“But there is one thing, brother. If you’re going to Stonegate, you’d do well to wear a heavy cloak.” With that, Kinn took to the shadows. |
