Drayden found comfort in the coolness of the tunnel from the desert. His body was covered in sweat from his heavy training session near by. Many of the monsters in the plagued area were now dead. Some had arrows sticking out of their bodies. A few were barely recognizable to the drow after the fires of magic had burnt their flesh to nothing. He held the heavy crossbow in the crook of his arm as he walked. It was amazing how similar his new weapon was to his magic. And he couldn't deny that it was reassuring to slay your enemy before they get close enough to harm you. The Drow looked at the crossbow, something he never really had used until now. He found that he rather enjoyed these types of weapons. As if he were meant to use them.
His shoulders were burning from the strain of reloading the heavy thing, and from pulling the bowstring of the enchanted bow across his back earlier. Drayden leaned against the wall of the cave, casting his gaze to the Temple of Lloth that his Matron had errected. Perhaps it was the Matron's doing. But throughout the recent days, he had heard the Spider Queen's call within.
Heard wasnt accurate....more like felt her presence. All of his life, he had followed his own way, never had he been the one to pray to a deity, but this felt different. He shouldered the crossbow and walked up the great steps of the Temple. He could hear her calling him, beckoning him. Drayden looked up at the image of her before him, an impassive expression on his face. He calmly set down his weapons and went to his knees. His eyes closed slowly and he felt his consciousness melting away....

The emptiness of the state of mind was calming. Once, long ago, Drayden had come to this place. He had died and come here unwillingly. Now however, he was in the Abyss by choice. His mind was here, his body useless and left behind at the Temple. He could feel the chaos of this plane, could feel the embrace of his Queen that welcomed one of her children. Male or not, he was seeking her guidance. And it seemed she could not ignore Drayden's calls.
"You seek my counsel male? The one called Drayden...servant of Kal'iksix Viaxus."
"I seek only your wisdom my Queen, I mean no disrespect."
"Your skin should be flayed from your bones considering your insolence and blasphemy in past times. You come seeking MY aid?"
"Aid...no. Your guidance and wisdom. Yes."
"Why should I help one that turned from me? One that defied my will?!" *the voice rose in anger*
"I am not the weak half drow I was before, my father...."
"Another foolish weak male. If I had my way he would have been sacrificed long ago. Him and his weak DEAD house."
"My Queen. That is not the reason I come to you this day."
"Then name it male and be done with it. I have not the time or the patience for your history lesson."
"My Matron is strong. She is capable. I find myself drawn to her and to your grace. But her Patron is weak and drags your...our esteemed Matron down. He holds her back. I can give much more than he. I deserve more than he..."
"YOU deserve it? I will tell you what you deserve male. Kal'iksix is strong because I deem it so. Remember that male. Know your life continues because I allow it. And know your place before I send you home as a bloody mess."
"As you command my Queen, my apologies."
"The male you call Nalimar has his uses, and I gave the Matron the will to choose her male. Yet, for all he has done, you see him has weak?"
"I do my queen. I do not believe he will fully serve your will. It is I who must remove him from his station. It is I that will give our Matron a daughter. He has proven his usefulness by blessing our house with yet another male. And that is something that angers you, I know."
"YOU?" *Laughter can be heard echoing through his mind. Enough to make his head throb from pain* "And why do you commune with me about this? Why is the Male still at her side as her Patron? And, I am more angered by the ramblings of a male who feels that he has the privilege to speak to me."
"She looks at me differently than the others, she recognizes strength and desires the strongest. The Matron has given me her favor...so i see that as your blessing.."
*Again the laughter throughout his mind.* "Quite the optimist. It takes more than burning trees and buildings to earn my favor Male. Being the merciful one I am. I will grant you my blessing in this. Whatever must be done to empower me. To empower your Matron. You are a male so, you cannot possibly understand the entirety of this."
"That is all I seek my Queen. I seek your wisdom, I seek to serve you."
*After a moment of silence, Lloth's voice could be heard again.*
"I will give you this chance. Were in another male, you would be killed for daring to commune with me, but your House pleases me."
"I only seek your guidance my Queen. Nothing more. I wish to have your blessing in this endeavor."
"Your Matron was right to take you into her house....there is something different about you. Bide your time. Soon it will come, and you will stand beside the Matron and serve her as you serve me. You have my blessing male. The current Patron will falter. And when he does, it will be your duty to take his place, even if he must be forced from it."
"As you command my Queen." |
