Cezanne returned home to the theatre, her heart light and airy. For weeks, maybe months, her spirit had been stretched to its breaking point, but this night she had seen true beauty and love. Amidst the ridiculous talk of hexes and curses she tried to tune out, she had looked into the eyes of perfection.
"Morio," she said to herself. And again, lifting her fingertips to her mouth, to feel the sound his name made as it crossed her lips. "Morio..."
A Kitsune! Cezanne laughed in spite of herself, the sound ringing out like shining bubbles around her and echoing off the walls of the theatre. Who'd have thought that all this time...who knew that Kitsune were so strong, so valiant...so soft. She ached to touch his fluffy tails again.
Cezanne took a package out of her pack, setting the elegant doll aside to make room. She glanced at it again, wondering vaguely whose hand had fashioned it so perfectly. But with no time to ponder, she opened the package and poured out a pile of downy white feathers. Quickly, she began stringing the feathers together, binding them with silken thread. She hummed a soft tune as she worked, and before long, her project was completed. She stood, tacked the garment in place and looked back over her shoulder, swaying this way and that and giggling to herself.
"Cezanne?" The familiar voice came from the second floor, as Valentein shuffled downstairs slowly. Something deep insider her clenched and ached, but could not gain purchase in her heart for long.
Cezanne pranced playfully before Valentein, showing off three snowy-white feathered tails, fashioned and attached at the waist of her skirt. "I'm a Kitsune!"
Valentein half-smirked, watching her. "So you are."
Again Cezanne turned to Valentein, this time with an expression of concern. "Are you hurting? Are you hungry?"
Valen nodded his head once, in answer to both her inquiries. Cezanne pulled out a stool and seated him at a table. "I'll get you some food. Please rest." She leaned in to kiss his forehead lightly and dashed off, feathered tails afly, to the food crate.
Valentein watched curiously as her tails flounced and fluttered with the new spring in her step, then looked to the doll on the bar. "So, what did you do tonight?" |
