“You have to help!” The normally composed Kinn was shouting at his brother now, clearly upset. He had been trying to make his brother understand for hours now.

“I don’t have to do anything. “ Ladron’s voice was flat, even cold. “It is not my fault you and your friends are in over your heads.”

“You are wrong, brother. The chaos we are creating is exactly what we had planned.” Kinn tried to sound confident, but his brother could see his uneasiness.
“We simply need to grow our power to accomplish even grander, more important goals. We have new allies now. You would be impressed if you knew who they were. The Boss is planning something big and he is working to align the other chaos followers under a single, grand purpose! A Summoner of your power could be a valuable asset. Think of the rewards!”

Ladron listened to his younger brother as he always did. How long had he been watching Kinn’s back? How many messes did he clean up at Kinn’s request? How many of Kinn’s enemies met their death at the hands of one of Ladron’s summoned minions?

Ladron had raised small armies of undead warriors and summoned hordes of imps on his brother’s behalf. He had enslaved the minds of Meers, Ratmen, Ogre Lords and even Titans to aid his brother’s endeavors. He had called forth all manner of vicious beasts, a wide variety of elementals and even pulled deamons straight from the Abyss to help Kinn when he was in need. He had been doing these things as long as he could remember---and Ladron was an old drow.
To be honest, saving his younger brother was getting very old…..and Ladron had heard enough.

“Rewards?!” Ladron shouted at his brother now, magical energy giving unnatural power and volume to his words.

“What do I care about material wealth?! That’s your weakness, not mine! I crave only power! I crave the advancement of my craft! I certainly don’t care about your riches or your causes! I could care less if the supposedly “evil” brotherhoods of the land lay down and let themselves be overrun by the cursed virtue lovers. I could care less if the Lightsworn overtake the world, for that matter. They do not bother me today and they will not bother me tomorrow!”

Ladron’s voice returned to normal, the magical infusion draining away as his anger ebbed.

“Listen Kinn, “ Ladron’s voice was calm and even.

“I do not want to meet this “Boss” of yours. I do not care about his grand plans or your newfound allies. And make no mistake, I am not to be counted among your allies on this. Do you understand me? You have chosen this new path—and you will walk this path alone. I will be here for you when you are ready to leave this ridiculous idealism behind. “

Kinn narrowed his eyes and stared coldly at his brother. He had expected such a response, but he knew his brother really didn’t appreciate all that was at stake now.

“You think yourself isolated and immune from what is going on in the world but you are not, my brother.” Kinn was sincere as he spoke, “Moonglow is controlled by Humanists and their numbers swell like plaguespawn every day. The Zento ninja appear sympathetic to their cause and now seem to be posed to strike at us. We are the only ones trying to stop the injustice! If we are stopped, what will prevent the ideals that fester now in Moonglow from spreading throughout the land? How long before those anti-drow feelings come to Britain, even? How long before the angry masses are outside your tower door---torches in hand and wizards in tow set on destroying you? How long do you think you will be left alone if the Syndicate is unable to stop this humanist menace? Your dark skin gives you away, brother, it is only a matter of time……..”

Kinn could see that he struck a nerve with that last line. Of course, he knew he would. Neither Kinn nor Ladron were proud of their Drow heritage. In fact, they both despised most aspects of drow culture and did everything they could to deny their drow nature. It was the result of being orphaned when they were young and being raised by human foster parents.

“I almost feel pity for any angry mob who approaches my tower.” Ladron said coldly. Now get out of my sight before you meet the same fate any other unwelcome guest would meet.”

Kinn was smiling behind his mask as he left his brother’s tower. He knew had he accomplished what he set out to do with Ladron.

Yes, the seeds were most certainly planted. Before long, the Syndicate would surely have yet one more powerful new ally.
