A part of the continuing: Saga of House De’Chevia

Mere curiosity?: Austin De’Chevia

There, in the gloom and mold scented vaults of House De’Chevia were several old chests. These chests contained most of the archives a memory of the family members. Austin De’Chevia had watched his uncle Arieus wander in and out of there several times within the last several weeks. Austin’s eyes gleamed and a mischievous smirk snaked across his lips. The mage then, that strange smile upon his face, waited until the small hours of the morning, woke, and in meld with the dark folds of the shadows, he made his way for the archives.

BANG!!

No sooner had Austin touched to mighty door, and then did a ward of epic magnitude explode hither, igniting his face aflame and searing his clothes to cinder. It is now worth noting two things. Number one was that the smirk was no longer upon Austin’s lips. Number two was that the door had obviously been warded by Daynle. Austin, however, made a quick exit, as De’Chevia guards came hither, and found only the spent remains of a recall spell and a burst ward.

Austin was an elder mage, and could only assume that Daynle, the founder of House De’Chevia, and merely a grandmaster, had placed the ward. He would not make the mistake in under estimating that door again, for Daynle had many whom could have assisted with that strong magic, or perhaps even more traps. Austin was still very curious about what was within that room, yet dare not make another attempt without his cousin, now elder rouge, Rowland De’Chevia.

Several days later, and after healing from the previous debacle, Austin had sent word to the rouge. Making a rare appearance, and yet again under the cover of night, did both seek out the arcane vault.

Once again facing that terrible door, Austin watched Rowland seemingly magical fingers pluck three locks without incident. CLICK!. Austin’s face again held that grinch smile for he thought for certain Rowland had succeeded. Alas, however, the face of the rouge turned to him in horror, and the whisper: “Tha…that was narry a good sound”.

Austin’s eyes saucered into huge pools of onyx, and quickly did he shroud Rowland and himself in a pool of defensive energy. A split second after, arrows screamed out of the blackness that was the center chamber of this vault, and bounced hard upon the magic’s eerie glow. Now, the barrage ended, both made sure they were still hence and material. No ooOoooOoo’s were heard. All was well. Better yet, the silence of their passage had not been broken. That was the last trap and lock.

Rowland wished no part in the secret invasion of his own family archives, yet Austin reminded him that he was simply trying to find out why Arieus had been in the so much. It was too late for the rouge had already set afoot his hiding and stealth skills to negotiate the citadel guards, and was gone. This left Austin peering into the cracked door, alone.

He entered the vault and cast light upon the old musky chamber walls. There to his surprise lay eighteen chests. Some of these were metal, some wood. His attention was focused to each one, and finally came to rest upon a drawn metal., well embroidered container. Upon the container were written elven words and human words. The Brothers: De’Chevia. Within the layered dust could be witnessed several streaks recent “cleaned” of same, and thus had Austin found the chest Arieus had been into.

Double checking for wards, did Austin further cast magic untrap and telekinesis on the old, ornate chest. Nothing happened. Carefully, he set his hand upon the same places Arieus had, and cautiously opened the lid. His eyes rested upon two uniforms, both seemed to match in color. One was labeled Defender of KoS, the other a bit more elaborate, but not especially so, bore the characters Knight-Errant of The Knights of Sosaria. Also, placed neatly within, and resting atop the clothing, were two books. One was sloppily written (Arieus’s) and the other was even worse (Daynle’s) neither were good with the quill, but they were legible.

Austin made several routine trips to the vault, and learned of the wondrous tales, the lingering issues, and some of the interesting maneuvers of his family. That mischievous smile now was stern as he completed his final night’s wonderings, and concluded in the conclusion that some of the past best left hidden. Yet, to the wizard’s eye, which squinted with a pleasant smile, did he find interest. The tales were overall of virtue, and good friendships past.

Once more, did Austin see those unique and special uniforms, and began to ponder on perhaps seeking a set of his own. His voice low, his demeanor husk did he echo to himself and the eighteen chests, and his voice disappeared into shadow, at least for now.

“……they are purple and tan.”
