Her eyelids were heavy and resistant, but she managed to force them open after having slept for nearly twelve hours. She was on her left side and her first sight was a pile of dirty laundry, its peak stretching well above the horizon of the bed. Rhi stared emotionless at the cloth mountain: her once obsessive compulsion for cleanliness and orderliness having dissipated sometime over the past year. After some time she rolled onto her back and began to slide slowly off the bed until her small body sat crumpled on the cold, wooden floor.
She let out a long, loud yawn while her eyes scanned the room. More dirty laundry was scattered across the floor. Loose parchments, empty ale and water pitchers, partially eaten muffins, and an assortment of reagents covered the entire surfaces of her work desk and vanity. After yawning she sniffed the air a few times and then crinkled her nose as she caught the stench of something gone amuck. She sniffed once more and spied the culprit on the nightstand: a glass of milk that looked to be curdling.
She felt as though her legs and hips were secured by heavy anchors, weighing her down and sentencing her to serve time on the dirty floor. She stared at the spoiled milk and made no effort to fight the phantom weights. After sniffing the air once more, she ruled that the milk could sit there another day. Or two. She feigned the motion of hammering a gavel.
Seconds passed and were soon followed by minutes. Her thoughts began to wake, but the depression kept a firm grip on her body and restrained her to the floor. Her thoughts grew louder and quicker, picking up more and more momentum. Soon, she leaned her head back and against the side of the mattress, closed her eyes and tried to make heads or tails of her now racing thoughts.
She thought of Brittany’s visit last week. Rhi had not gotten out of the bed when she arrived, but she did manage to keep her eyes open while Brit offered some news that once-upon-a-time would have greatly disturbed Rhi. But since the day Rhi had resigned to the belief that Fong and Aegis were dead, her passion for any and all things had faded and nearly extinguished.
When Brit seemed to be finished with the story Rhi asked, “They took over? Just like that?” She might have snapped her fingers had she the energy.
“Yup, Rhi. Just like that!” Oddly, Brit made an energetic attempt to snap her fingers, but the motion only culminated to a quiet, gentle poof of air.
Rhi remained seated on the floor for the next thirty minutes, following her mind from thought to thought. She thought minimally about the power shift in Moonglow, concluded that the new leaders would probably do just fine and that there was no need for her to get off the floor. Other thoughts included: How long would the milk have to sit there before it stopped smelling? She had no idea. When was the last time she ate? No clue. How much longer could she tolerate her own stink before having to take a bath? She estimated two days.
After only thirty minutes Rhi felt the heaviness return to her eyelids. She scanned the room one more time and then lay on her side while pulling the covers off the bed and into the floor with her. It wasn’t long before she was fast asleep in her bedroom floor. _________________
