The long line of men and women clad in blue stood in attention on the firm boards of the Moonglow docks. A quick sea breeze passed through the line, ruffling their clothes for a moment. Among the other ships docked at the Moonglow port were two large ships with a sizable Moonglow blue flag at the stern of each, the word Fury painted on the side of one boat, and Revenge painted on the side of the other. Vargus looked from the line to the group of pack horses, each weighed down by heavy bags filled with stone and ingots, then gave a slight nod, before saying, "Well done, militia! The caravan has been escorted from Minoc safely." A resounding "Semper Veritas!" came from the group of soldiers.
Vargus gave a quick nod. "Now, for our next move. All volunteers, step forward!" Five men, First Sergeant Malicite, Sergeant Eddard, Lance Corporal Maverick, and two hardy recruits, Eragon and Armon, took a step forward. Vargus then moved his gaze to Scipio. "Captain, you and all who are staying back will guard the docks." The bulky man took a few steps forward, then eyed each individual, before speaking. "You heard the Minister! Everyone but the five who stepped forward, break from the line, and come with me!" Several men and women broke from the line, and followed Scipio out of view.
The Captain's commands could still be faintly heard in the background, as he coordinated the militiamen and women in patrols along the edge of the docks. Vargus then focused his attention on the five volunteers in front of him. He pointed to the group of pack horses. "Each of us will unload everything being held by the horses, and load it on the ships. Mal, Maverick, and Armon, you will be loading everything those three horses are carrying..." He pointed to three pack horses grouped together. "... And will be loading it onto the ship, Revenge. Eddard, Eragon, and I will load what the other three are carrying onto the ship, Fury." The two groups quickly loaded the heavy bags being held by the horses into the designated ships, before moving back in line. Vargus let out a quick breath, and waited a moment for the recruits to begin breathing normally again. After a few moments, he nodded once, then began to speak. "Right! First Sergeant! You, Maverick, and Armon will board the ship, Revenge. You will give directions to the tiller man of the boat yourself. Eddard, Eragon, and I will be boarding Fury. Eddard, you will be giving directions to the tiller man of Fury yourself. The journey from Moonglow to Legion lands will be long, but you are all prepared." Each of the volunteers gave a firm nod, their eyes filled with pride. "Malicite! Lead your group to Revenge. We'll set sail now." Malicite nodded, "Aye, sir!" He then took a step forward, and looked to Armon and Maverick before speaking. "Mav, Armon! Come with me. We'll move to the ship." Vargus watched the three move to the ship for a moment, then motioned Eddard and Eragon to follow him, as he boarded his ship, Fury.
"Alright! Both ships, raise anchors!" Both Malicite and Eddard echoed his command to their tiller man. Vargus nodded once. "We'll begin the voyage, now. Set sail, and let's be off." Both Mal and Eddard shouted commands at their tiller man, as both tiller men ran about their ship, making final preparations for the departure. The ships slowly began to leave the docks, and soon, they were outside of Moonglow, headed straight to Legion lands.
----
The journey was long, but smooth, and without any difficulties other than the rare sea serpent, which was quickly put to waste by Lance Corporal Maverick, and his deadly aim with a bow. After countless hours of sailing, the Moonglowians finally reached the bay that was alongside Legion territory. The ships turned to face the bay, and sailed towards land. Vargus looked to the land, a relaxed expression upon his face. Eragon stepped near Vargus and grinned, saying, "Finally... We've been at sea much too long, it'll be good to set foot on land again." Vargus looked to Eragon, and gave a slight nod.
The ship under First Sergeant Mal's command, Revenge, was the first to reach land. Shortly afterwards, Fury, the ship under Sergeant Eddard's command, followed suit and reached land. The men soon moved onto land, tugging large bags full of ingots, stone, food, and other such supplies behind them. The six of them moved in and out of the ships, tugging all of the bags of wood and ingots out of the boats. Vargus rubbed his chin, then began to speak. "The Legion buildings are just north of here. We won't be going up there for now. The spot where we'll be building the outpost is just South West of our current position, in the woods. It's rather secluded, so I don't think we'll be getting too much trouble. And, even if the Legion finds us and decides to attack... Well, we still shouldn't be having too much trouble." Some of the men who had past experiences with the Legion showed a small grin. Vargus pointed out towards the woods, still looking towards the group of men. "We'll be moving towards the camp sight now. It'll take a few trips there and back to get all of the resources to the camp, but it's not too far away, and you all could use the exercize." Vargus then motioned the group to follow him, and led them to a small clearing in the forest. The men dropped the bags they were carrying, and then First Sergeant Malicite spoke. "Don't get comfortable! We've got a few more trips to go before we can set up camp and rest for the night. Come! Let's move back to the shore and start bringing back the other supplies." Lance Corporal Maverick nodded firmly, then looked to the two recruits, shouting, "Let's MOVE." Both Eragon and Armon's eyes widened a bit, then they began to follow the other four back to the shores, their pace quick.
After a few trips from the shore to the camp site, the group successfully moved all of the needed resources and supplies to the encampment. The recruits were both panting softly, their exhaustion showing, despite their attempts to hide it. Vargus examined the recruits for a moment, then gave a slight nod. "Let's set up camp. Lay out your bedrolls, and get some rest. You'll need it for tomorrow. We'll be working for much of the day. The recruits fell on their bedrolls, exhausted, while the other four sat down on their bedrolls. Maverick looked over to Vargus, then said, "I'll take the first guard shift." Vargus nodded slightly, before Sergeant Eddard spoke. "That sounds good. Let's have each shift last an hour." He looked to Vargus for confirmation of his order. Vargus said, "Aye, sounds good enough. Mav, in one hour, I want you to wake one of us three up. Leave the two recruits be for now, I want them to save their energy for tomorrow." Maverick nodded, then said, "Yes, sir." Vargus, Malicite, and Eddard each tucked themselves in their bedrolls, while Maverick stood up, and began to silently walk about the camp. |

Several days after the men had landed on the Legion beaches
Vargus stood in front of a long line of militia in front of the Moonglow Headquarters, around ten men and women adorned in Moonglow blue clothing, all battle ready. Vargus showed a small frown, then said, "You were all looking forward to a fight, but sadly, our enemy has decided that it is best for them to surrender." Vargus paused for a moment, to let his words set in. The faces of each militiaman and woman tightened in frustration. He then continued to speak, "I share the same feelings as you do. But, do know, that we have won. By backing away from the fight, they have acknowledged the fact that they are also surrendering their lands."
Vargus motioned to a large boat that was docked in the sea beside the Head Quarters. He said, "We'll be making a final patrol of our new lands, so that all of you may become familiar with what is now ours." Vargus motioned the troops to the ship, and the all began to move into it. Once everyone had moved inside the boat, Vargus nodded to the tiller man of the boat and said, "We'll begin our journey back, now." The tiller man nodded, then, after moving around the boat, making final preparations for the departure, the boat began to move away from the Moonglow beach.
After several hours of sailing, the group reached the new Moonglow territory. Vargus shouted, "Alright militia! Let's get off this damned boat." The men and women left the boat and lined up against a building that was nearby. Vargus looked around the forested area for a moment, then to the militia. He then said, "We're going to take a look around our newly acquired lands. Sergeant Eddard and I will both lead a group around the lands so that everyone may become acquainted with it."
After the militia split up into two teams, the groups separated. As the groups moved along, the newer recruits looked around their new lands with a slight sense of awe, while the veterans had a small smirk planted upon their faces. While many were disappointed about how easily the lands were won over, Moonglow had triumphed, and the pride shown in the eyes of all Moonglow men and women were easily seen. |
