My dear, loving wife,

I know not what this adventure brings me. I do know, however, that I wish I could have given you the life you wanted. I wish I could have been the husband that you deserved. Unfortunately, the quiet life never appealed to me. I think, however, deep down inside, you knew this.

If I am to return, I return to your arms only. Perhaps we will stay here, in this land, with Mave and Aless. Who knows. I sure don't.

No matter what happens, know that I love you. You are on my mind every second of this adventure. You are part of me.

In the event that I do not survive this, I ask that you take care of our daughter. Don't give up, and look for the happiness that is out there for you.

I will always be by your side, my love. And I know that I will carry a bit of your spirit with me, whether I travel to far off lands, or to the heavens. You will always be a part of me.

With love,

Vaen

Time seemed unending as the two women sat at the kitchen table with their hot tea cups between their hands. Neither spoke, merely gazed down into their cups losing themselves in thought and worry. Both women had faced these long painful moments before, but no matter how many times they sat waiting it never became easier.
Finally the waiting became too much for Bri and she gently pushed herself back. The squeak of the chair against the floor penetrated the room as she gently stood. Everything felt as if it were moving in slow motion. Aless was startled out of her own trance. The two women looked into each others eyes saying nothing. Aless nodded to Bri knowing her moment of patience was near an end also and that they each needed to keep themselves occupied.
Bri stood at the bottom of the stairs for a moment before slowly climbing towards her chambers. She entered the room and closed her eyes still smelling him, feeling his presence. Standing there faced by loneliness and quiet she went over to her pack to retrieve paper and ink to occupy her mind.
As she fumbled through her pack she noticed a letter tucked in between her things. Slowly she pulled it out and opened it. Seeing his script she immediately fell to the floor and sat with the tears threatening to give way. She hugged the letter tightly and painfully whispered “please come back… please don’t leave me now”
It was the only time he had ever left her a letter before leaving for battle….
