The rose fingered Dawn had only just touched the edges of the sky, gently pushing aside Night's cold mantle. Streaking reddish gold and silver rays painting the morning tapestry, scattering stray wisps of frosty clouds in its borning light. Here and there, stubborn stars, refusing to fade, winked and shimmered like tiny pieces of ice slowly melting into memory.
The snow creaked under Arahim's feet as he neared Joanna's house. A monument to her beloved Magincia that seemed so out of place within this valley, and yet so perfect, all sandstone and vibrant foliage.
He fingered the key she had given him almost reverantly, and unlocked the front door, pulling his boots off before entering so as not to wake her.
The fire had died out in the front room leaving a lingering chill in the air, so Arahim set about building a new fire in anticipation of her imminent awakening.
Satisfied that the blaze within the hearth would last till she awoke, Arahim quietly crept upstairs. The cold that had settled into the sandstone floor wrapping his bare feet in a biting frost, so he quickened his pace, and tried to keep on just his toes.
Slowly opening the door to Joanna's room, and keeping as still as he could, he was glad to find her still peacefully asleep. Moreover, he was glad to find that the fireplace in her room still held a warming glow.
He thought to stoke the flames, but quickly decided against it, allowing her her sleep.
He watched Joanna sleep for long minutes. Her dark hair was a tangle. Her lips parted ever so slightly at every breath she took. The blankets lined every curve and contour of her body.
She was perfect, and Arahim was lost just looking at her.
Shrugging off his armor with an efficient silence born of long practice, he slipped into bed next to her.
Inch by inch he moved closer to her. He could smell her, and feel the warmth radiating from her. He dared not move suddenly for fear of disturbing her, and it was maddening to him.
His hand found her hip as he snuggled in closer to her. Joanna let out a small yawn as she slowly realized she was no longer alone... then an alarmed squeal as Arahim stuck his cold, cold feet to her warm, bare leg! |
