I have it on good authority that Garriott is attempting to regain the Ultima license from EA.
I hope he succeedes, EA has really screwed the pooch since he left, in so many ways. |

I agree, but its Richards personality... he is always about 'the next big thing'.
If he hadn't sold the UO Idea/Franchise to EA the came wouldnt have been made, Origin didnt have the funds/investment backing to do justice to the idea.
At this point we would all be at the hands of Psudo-MMOs through console games, blowing each other up with BFGs. If UO hadn't have been made by EA...
Still even if he does somehow regain the franchise, he would still be after 'the next big thing' and UO would be at best a hobby farm. |

UO would not be a hobby farm for him.
He worked on the Ultima series for -YEARS-, and in fact did it almost all the way through college. I have a feeling if he did get the game back, he would do it justice. _________________

I think you mistook my meaning.
If he were able to reaquire the ultima rights from EA he would work on a UO2 type product, and not spend an exhorbant amount of resources on the current UO incarnation.
I think he would hold a fond place in his heart for the original UO and put a good team to work on it, but as I said he is about the next big thing, and he would make a new game.
*note: This is not what I am suggesting, just what I think would happen from what I know of Richard... I personally think UO could be again turned into a niche genre RPG with very high end profitabiltiy.
I also may be reading too much into his statement so I had better put it in context, the note I got from him said only this:
"...Plus, perhapse we will travel to Britannia again in the future."
So read into that what you may. |

Richard will get Ultima rights again. and with it will return Lord Brittish. Im not so sure he would ditch Ultima Online. tho he may. i would think he would actuall give it the upgrade it CAN get, not the KR/SA we are getting. i mean a 3d Dungeon Siege(laz-mod) type game it could be. tho that would require a total jump form 2 to 3d.
either way. not matther what i roleplay, i am loyal to my king _________________

First off, Richard Garriott can (EXPLETIVE DELETED) my (EXPLETIVE DELETED). He is a sorry sad-sack son of a (EXPLETIVE DELETED) that should be decapitated French Revolution-style and have his millions burned to the ground along with his dessicated carcas.
NCSoft, his precious Austin company, just fired a gajillion or so people at the onset of one of the worst economic disasters to face the United States. Working in the industry as it is happens to be incredibly unstable, success and failure creeping around every corner, around every ship date. And here he is, Richard "Lord British" Garriott, crying and complaining that "I'm bored with my castle. I WANT TO GO TO THE MOON!".
This (EXPLETIVE DELETED) has spent $30 million to fly to space in a Russian spacecraft. To put that in context, "Dick" will be spending the equivalent of the average salary of 100 NCSoft employees for 6 years at an average of $50,000 each to leave the earth's atmosphere. As a tourist.
(EXPLETIVE DELETED) Garriott. (EXPLETIVE DELETED) him right in the ear.
He sold out Ultima long, long ago, to a gigantic corporation you know and love and hate as Electronic Arts, who has since mismanaged the license in the only way they know how. By providing a skeletal crew of development and stringing along subscribers with appetizer-sized bites of content here and there every two years or so.
Narc, I sincerely, wholeheartedly doubt that Garriott would be even remotely interested in returning to his "beloved" Sosaria, or attempting to wrest control from Mythic of an aging, but profitable cash cow like Ultima. And even if he DID, the raging sense of entitlement that (EXPLETIVE DELETED) would bring to the production and design of a new title would make anyone that has experienced Sosaria in the fullest shudder and weep. |
