He hummed a mirthless tune with a repetitive, dirgy cadence as he moved carefully across the stone floor on his knees.
Every few feet was another lantern. He made sure there was plenty of oil within, and lit them.
Every floor of his home was littered with these lanterns, and every lantern burned brightly and unshuttered until the very barest scrap of shadow was chased back out into the night.
Ever since Thurisaz had removed the curse that had poisoned Arahim's body, things were oddly different.
The dark seemed a little darker.
The quiet a little louder.
There was something in his head that pulsed and breathed, fogged over his sleep with disjointed visions, until Arahim could no longer stand the inky veil of night.
Standing in a corner, he pulled three lanterns closer to himself, and began his long wait.
His left hand clutched at his ruined right arm as he rocked himself back and forth, smiling a faint, silent smile and watching the window intensely.
"Just a few more hours, " he thought to himself, "and the sun will be up. I'll sleep then." |
