Quote: | "A tool that automatically steals IDs of non-encrypted sessions and breaks into Google Mail accounts has been presented at the Defcon hackers' conference in Las Vegas. Last week Google introduced a new feature in Gmail that allows users to permanently switch on SSL and use it for every action involving Gmail, and not only, authentication. users who did not turn it on now have a serious reason to do so as Mike Perry, the reverse engineer from San Francisco who developed the tool is planning to release it in two weeks." |
To enable SSL:
1. Log in to gmail.
2. Click on "Settings" in the top right of the page.
3. Scroll down to the bottom to see:
Browser connection:
Always use https
Don't always use https
4. Select "Always use https" _________________ "There are those who dream to escape reality, and there are those who dream to change it." |

Does this have any impact on using gmail through POP/SMTP with say outlook? Would I have to activate it on gmail and then tweak my settings in outlook? |

This attack method is for web based access only, if you're using Outlook you're fine.
The attack can theoretically work on Hotmail and Yahoo Mail as well, although neither of those sites provide the constant SSL session that gmail does now, which could be extremely dangerous in the future. _________________ "There are those who dream to escape reality, and there are those who dream to change it." |

my actual EMAIL account (the one I don't have full of spam) is from AOL (although I get my isp from another company) is AOL in the same situation as hotmail and yahoo or is it better/worse off? _________________ It does not require a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority keen to set brush fires in people's minds. - Samuel Adams |

I'm not sure which other web based services are affected. The easiest way to avoid the issue is to log out of your mail account the moment you are done with it, avoid opening unknown emails and having proper firewall protection setup, as the attack would involve someone being able to intercept/sniff your network traffic or otherwise compromise your network security. _________________ "There are those who dream to escape reality, and there are those who dream to change it." |
