Isk slid the next issue of the Voice across his desk admiring the visuals which he had inked just days before. “This may be the best one yet” He said while leaning back, obviously exhausted from the work.
At his left hand side was a cold cup of tea which wife had prepared for him earlier, a slash of brown ink on the handle. The surroundings seemed comforting and the porcelain masked magnate took time to reflect on the room. His new office was well organized aside from the mess on his table with suitable space on the walls where paintings could be hung. His personal books rested in the book shelves and a model of his ship, the Legacy, remained in a visible spot to his right. Slouching down Isk rested his hands on his stomach and extended his legs under the table, holding them straight with one booted foot over the other.
Slumber soon took him off to dreams.
* * * * *
Laughing, Isk walked the dark corridor in silence as the cutting laughter and shrieking played out in the background. “A familiar sound” Isk remarked knowing the setting was unnatural. Waving his right hand to cut up a spider’s web which separated him from the remainder of the dark hall Isk paused and took a better look at his surroundings. It was the cave which his daughter had shown him in a dream many months ago. Walking in the darkness following the route he took the last time he was in this dream scape Isk came to the end of the wall where the sound of dripping water melted into the laughter.
“Why am I back here? Who are you?” Isk narrowed his eyes as if he could better focus them in the pitch blackness of the cave. Before him two white orbs appeared, the eyes of the woman laughing at him. Reaching out suddenly to take hold of her Isk found that it was he who was seized by the wrist. Anticipating a blow he barely flinched, lifting the other arm to defend his mask. The woman spun him as her eyes seemed to light up the cave wall. The familiar site of the invasion westward had been erased replaced by a smudge as the red ochre mural seemed to have been washed away by some vandal.
“You have taken it from us!” The shout was deafening and followed by pain as the figure lunged the masked dreamer into the wall.
A sudden gasp followed until he could hear the sound of her running away from him.
“You have done it father, the enemy in the east is no more but the price has been great” Touching his mask to make sure it was in place after having been tossed into the wall Isk violently turned to meet then new voice. Calming to the pleasant tone of it the new voice continued to speak to him.
“The eastern campaign is over, Minoc is comfortable now though I know we will never forget the price we payed” she continued to speak in whispers, the slightest hint of silver hair evident in the darkness. “Vengeance breeds vengeance, father.”
