So is it just me or does anyone else think this is just greedy... EA charging sales tax for Ultima Online subscription payments? I just noticed today when I went to re activate an account of a friend... I got an extra message at the end warning me that because I live in PA it would cost me 77 more cents... No it isn't alot. But wtf does EA need it for? And is it only UO? It only mentions UO when I look it up on the EA support page.

Did anyone get a notice about this? I certainly never did and I've always had my email set to receive updates.

I've also not noticed a tax on any other online subscriptions I pay for.

QUESTION
Why am I being charged sales tax on my subscription?

Answer

Electronic Arts will be charging local and sales tax for Ultima Online subscriptions beginning on June 26, 2007. The reason for this is many U.S. states are implementing taxes on online subscriptions. The tax calculation will be handled on the back-end using a system provided to us by Vertex.

Please Note: This Tax implementation began on January 29th, 2008. The tax will be assessed on applicable accounts starting on this date.

The tax is only for customers with a U.S. or Canada billing address and will not affect APO customers. Tax will be calculated by zip code. Before you can finalize a subscription, you will be shown what is listed as the "estimated tax". This is listed as an estimate only for legal reasons. It is in fact the actual amount to be billed.

It gets charged on foreign subscriptions too, from what I understand its the sales tax from the state EA operates from being applied to gaming subscriptions regardless of your actual location.

It does say:

The reason for this is many U.S. states are implementing taxes on online subscriptions.

I would read that as it was the respective state responsible, not EA.

Wow Americans have it easy with taxes. Connecticut with 1% That is trammy.

Don't understand how the internet can be taxed though. Sounds like an excuse to have me pay 14% more for a game that's almost as old as my soon to be dead shetland sheepdog

Neither is VA. I got the same message though when I activated a subscription recently with a $.00 amount listed for me to pay.

Congress tried to pass it, but failed. Some states loved it so much that they decided to take it on themselves.

GA isn't on there either... though that could be because half of our state probably hasn't discovered the internet...

Well, California isn't either. Which is surprising, as they tax everything out here. Das fuhrer Arnold und seins reich have been getting very tax happy lately.

Give it time Mave.
