I was mulling over a question tonight, and I'm not sure of the answer.
Have we ever collectively agreed on a time flow standard?
IE, how the flow of RL time equates to in game time?
I've always went with the standard that 1 real month = 1 UO year.
Perhaps that is incorrect. Someone enlighten me. If we do not have a time standard, we should consider one. It would be a helpful tool for standardizing the history of the shard and our characters, etc.
Thoughts, suggestions? _________________ ~Lord Talon Skyfire

As far as the actual game conversion goes, 5 in game years pass with every 1 real year. |

Cear has a good system on his website. Here it is, thanks Cear!
Quote: | * Time in Britannia passes quickly compared to our Earth time.
* In 2 Earth hours an entire Britannian day will have passed.
* Twelve Britannian days makes one Earth day.
* Just as on Earth, a Britannian year has twelve months.
* Each Britannian month, however, consists of 73 days.
* This makes a Britannian year last 876 Britannian days, which is 73 Earth days.
* One Earth year equals five Britannian years.
* The release date of Ultima Online was in the Britannian year 289.

Then i also heard 1 rl month = 1 year
if 1 rl month = 1 year... Walter'd be like 104 years old. *cries* _________________

The math behind it:
Timeflow in UO works out to be one day every two hours. If you calculate that out, that equals one year per IRL month if you are using the earth year as a standard. This is important because I'm going to assume that UO humans are like IRL humans when it comes to aging. As well, it helps give perspective of how much time has passed by relating time to how we understand it.
Otherwise, as others have stated, UO months are incredibly long, so there are only 5 Britannian years per IRL year.
I'm not hardcore enough to use Britannian years, since it's easier to do math based on 1 month = 1 year. When your chars and major events become IRL years old, it becomes harder to calculate how long ago it'd be in Britannian years. |

Here are some facts relating to time in Ultima Online:
Time in Britannia passes quickly compared to our Earth time.
In 2 Earth hours an entire Britannian day will have passed.
Twelve Britannian days makes one Earth day.
Just as on Earth, a Britannian year has twelve months.
Each Britannian month, however, consists of 73 days.
This makes a Britannian year last 876 Britannian days, which is 73 Earth days.
One Earth year equals five Britannian years.
The release date of Ultima Online was in the Britannian year 289.

Amen. Yeah, going with Nort, I don't really follow the UO time all that much, though Talon brings up a valid point, we really should get an accurate time ratio going. 1 month = 1 year sounds pretty valid to me. _________________

What you guys need to decide, is that yes, these planets rotate around their suns at X time faster than our's...
That's all fine. But do we actually age that fast?
Say, for instance, something were to happen to our universe (and, for argument purposes, we survived). And, for some reason, the Earth spun on its axis a little faster, and was moving around the sun faster as well.
Yes, our days would go by faster. And yes, our years faster.
...But we would age the same.
I myself have aged Vaen about 12 years since I started playing him. So obviously I've gone with some time flow push. But I'm throwing the above idea in as an option if we, as a community, ever decide to agree upon a single idea. _________________

Ultima has a consistant time flow since its begining. and that meant 700,024 years before mondain even died.
Thank you for referenceing my site but that it just an Origin calculator given out to players and websites.
however yes. people generally age chars however they wish. especially to hasten childbirth.
Lots of us do not and go by Ultima's time. It doesnt really matter. but dont expect for everyone to think its amazing your 100 years old. Iolo ws 200 by ultima 7. _________________

I always went with 1 RL year = 5 UO years. Arc was 13 when I created her and seriously started playing UO in 2000... I slowed aging a little bit and RPed her as in her late 30s (hey, she was young at heart) by the time I quit in 2004. |

For what it's worth I've also followed the 1 year = 5 year rule and have aged my characters accordingly.
But I never gave thought to weeks, months or even days. |

I try to age my characters accordingly, but it is hard sometimes to keep track of. It would be cool to use origin's original time flow plan as a standard.
As Cear mentioned though, what directly comes to mind is Iolo talking to you in the first thirty seconds of Ultima Seven and telling you hes 200 years old or whatever. I think this would happen because of what Vaen was saying.
Technically we've just never really thought of it that way, we role play humans as we are use to being ourselves. Such a thing might warrant consideration..
Perhaps we shouldn't be acting quite so old at 60. In fact, if you really want to break down the math....
60 Earth years = 60 * 5 Britannian Years. That means 60 is the equivalent of 300 years of age in Britannia. So if we wanted to be considered 'old', 300 then becomes a reasonable age.
Vice Versa, if we were to follow this logic, than saying you are 60 in Britannia equates to 60/5 to discern how old you are in Earth years. Heh, how about that, 12 years old.
Interesting topic to think about. I'd be all for standardizing time flow...Even if it means changing a few numbers here or there in some character profiles. _________________ "You see I can not be forsaken, because I'm not the only one.
