How wrong she was, thinking the baby would be days before it came into the world. The night she'd woken up with the band of pain across her belly, she thought she had at least a few days. But the child was determined, and he wished to be among his people and do things in his own good time.
By the time six hours had ticked off on the wall clock, Merrique was well into her labor. She was frightened, out here on the edge of the Fens and alone, and completely unable to call for help. Throughout all the time she'd spent in her self imposed exile, it never crossed her mind that something like this could happen.
Merrique did her best to attend to herself as she would have at any birth. She walked, she breathed deep when her body told her to, and most importantly she remained calm despite the welling fear. When the birth contractions were frequent and painful enough to signify the imminent birth, she took to the soft bed and prayed for nature to take her course kindly and show mercy toward the babe and herself. Somehow, through the worst of it, Merrique remained exceptionally calm and eerily quiet. She never did understand all the screaming that went with some women's births; in her mind that was no way for a child to enter the world.
It was not much longer when the quiet, large eyed child was borne unto the dark world of Malas. How beautiful he was, she thought as she struggled to wrap him and hold him close. His eyes were such a dark brown, probably the only feature that reflected her blood. The remaining features were purely Walter's, and it was almost unnerving to see such a dramatic resemblance. As mother and child regarded each other for the first time, Merrique fell in love in that way only a woman who's given birth can feel.
Ignoring her own pain as her body began its healing process, she held the child to her chest and whispered into the darkness.
"You will be called Shalcross. Woe is to those who shall cross you." She kissed the top of the baby's head and again whispered "To Umbra I give you. To you I give myself." _________________
. . . But the dark is very trustworthy.
It's always as dark as you thought it was.
And you don't have to work at staying there.
All you have to do is survive it.
And I've been doing that forever.
