"Commonwealth?!!!!" Anthraxas shrieked when he heard the news of the plebiscite. "He dared to surrender MY claim to Yew?! NOOO!!!" He grabbed the bearer of the tidings, a spindly merchant, by the neck and threw him against the wall of his shop, spilling the contents of several shelves onto the hardwood floor. With a gutteral growl, he then stormed out. The little man rubbed his head and noted it was bleeding. "What did I say?" he muttered.
Anthraxas slammed the manor's front door behind him and barged into his brother's study. Thrax looked up from his desk and sighed. "I guess you've heard," he said. It was not a question.
The daemon's eyes blazed and his nostrils flared. "What do you mean by throwing away our... MY... inheritance?! Yew is mine... mine!!! Do you hear?! You've gone too far!"
"Calm yourself before your head explodes, brother. You still have this place to co-rule... which, by the way, has been renamed Alderglen. It is not an insignificant tract of land now, is it? Besides, you could never have Yew; the people would never accept you as their master. You're far to crude and myopic in your thinking. The days of ruling by might are over... at least around here."
His brother was not placated, nor impressed by his words. "Oggaroth promised me... us... that Yew would be ours! Have you forgotten that?!"
Thrax shook his head. "Not at all. One slight hitch, however. Oggaroth has been banished for good this time. Happened last night. Saw it myself. Spawn is free of him again. All my fawning to him was just a means to keep my family safe from harm. Control of Yew was a bargaining chip in the game, something I told him I wanted for myself just to keep him busy and away from here. It worked too."
"Your devotion was false?"
"Of course it was! Did you honestly think I would serve him after what he did to me? Why brother, your gullibility astounds and embarrasses me. I thought you... I... we? were smarter than that." He shook his head.
"I should just kill you." Anthraxas put his hand on the hilt of his sheathed kryss.
Thrax sighed. "Well, if you do, profit from it."
Anthraxas glared at him. "You babble."
"No, I have heard there is a large reward out for me. If you're going to kill me, make a little money on the side, why not?"
The daemon-brother snorted. "This isn't over, brother," he snarled as he stalked out of the room.
Thrax watched him leave and then went back to work. "Idiot," he muttered under his breath. |
