An informant brought news of the fighting between the Dark Order and their Umbra allies against the Protectorate. "The initial skirmishes went against the Order, but they only appeared to be probing attacks. This latest one was in force and was a crushing blow," she stated.

Both the Baron and Anthraxas smiled simultaneously. To the Baron, who happened to notice, it was quite disconcerting. "I had hoped it was only a matter of time before Umbra loosed its hordes into the fray. I suppose once the lich was put in his place, the Matriarch couldn't resist the urge to strike once again at their eternal foe, Sanctus."

"And a powerful strike it was!" Anthraxas added. "I spoke with the Master and Matriarch last eve. Both boasted of the slaughter. If only I had been there... but these perpetual patrols of our territory have been keeping me away!"

Thrax looked at him. "You wish to fight? Then go, I will find other means to look after our borders."

"I do not need your permission to do anything!" Anthraxas snarled. "I am not one of your hirelings!"

Thrax sighed. "Oh yes," he turned, smiling condescendingly. "Far be it from me to tell you what to do. My deepest apologies!" He looked back at the map lying on the table in front of them.

Anthraxas calmed and strode stiffly out of the room.

"Idiot," Thrax muttered.

"Shall I leave also?" the woman asked.

"No, not yet. I have another task for you. You will be the liaison between me and the drow assassins. Shadow the Governor-Regent. Report his movements to me and them. Do not strike him yourself. Leave that to the drow. I will inform them of your work and you can meet to discuss the details of your association."

"As you wish."

"Now, listen carefully..."
