|
The second task was similar to the first, except was meant to establish presence of the faith in lands it was practiced in, and was more so an optional task to gain access to Darrien's vast library.
Zach and Ariakis worked together on it, starting in Cove on the day of a meeting there. Zach was able to share his knowledge of building a sacred pyre to the other slave.
Ariakis was a large help to Zach, as he knew Britannia well and was able to show him where Minoc and Vesper were. Minoc was a large woodsey town with an abundance of animals, finding the resources for the pyre was simple.
As the two moved on to Vesper, Zach was amazed at the abundance of water and the number of bridges all over the city. As the two built the pyre, a local took interest in them.
The two tried explaining to him how it was a ritual for the glory of Oblivion, but he didn't seem to get it and left. The rest of the pyre went fairly successfully, despite the interruption.
Satisfied with themselves, they returned to the slave dormitory to rest. Zach made notes of the task in his journal and awaited the Taskmaster to come, but was quickly distracted by something seeming to beckon him outside. He looked to Ariakis, who was already walking towards the door. Something was calling them.
Outside, a black moongate swirled. The Drow in Darrien's service was already standing by it, motioning the two towards it. Zach went through, not expecting the chilling darkness he was greeted with on the other side. A lone figure stood in the black space- Darrien Church, the Lich Lord. Zach knelt before him, noting the other slave beside him, and Darrien himself assigned the next task.
Zachary felt confident in his faith. It was the entire focus of his family, he was already more educated in it than he let on in fear he would be harmed due to his ancestry.
And with that, Lord Darrien and the drow left them. Zachary turned around and looked at the darkness surrounding him, the sheer vastness of it amazed him. He sighed, Darrien was likely going to find out about his lineage through this task. But at the very least, he felt comforted feeling that at this point his soul would be cast into Oblivion rather than shoved into a lantern and tormented for eternity. He was ready to face his destiny, be it in servitude of Darrien or be it death.
A short time later, the drow returned.
After receiving the reading materials, they were left alone again in the darkness. Eagerly, Zach began to read the books. He wanted to be prepared for anything that was to come.
