"M'lord, I think you should prepare yourself. I have word that strangers have been spotted in the woods to the west, likely scouts and spies. Someone is planning an attack, or else a kidnapping," the spindly man dressed in a tattered brown robe warned his master, Baron Thrax.
"I appreciate the warning, Esric, but I am already aware of what you speak. My spies elsewhere have indicated an increased activity among our enemies, but common sense alone would indicate what their next move might be," the Baron, busy shuffling papers at his desk, calmly replied. Noting the silence, he looked up at his henchman. "You need not worry; I have taken measures to protect my lands, my family and my person from intruders and interlopers."
Esric nodded. "Of course, sire," he said, bowing.
The Baron smiled. "This is an old game with me. I have been hounded and hunted before... many times. The adder seems easily picked up by the tail, but the fangs can still bite. One who plays with them will get bitten sooner or later. And I, my friend, am a very experienced snake."
"Yes, m'lord," Esric answered as he turned to leave.
"We shall invite them in," Thrax added. "Yes, we shall make them feel quite at home here."
Esric looked around, appearing perplexed. "Invite them in sire?"
Thrax nodded. "Why yes. Of course. The invitation shall read: See Thraxstadt... and die," he replied, drawing an invisible banner in the air in front of him, all the while smiling wickedly. |
