The new routines that were forming in Merrique's world suited her well, despite the ongoing problems with her health and the fright at the hands of Khal. Happiness had, by some odd twist of fate, embedded itself into her world and she found it pleasing.

Mornings would find her drowsy and content, and she would wake slowly before getting up to eat. Even drinking the god-awful potions from Walter's healer didn't seem so bad when she tried to keep things in perspective. None of them were quite as nasty as the one she had surrendered to him many nights past so it seemed a fair enough trade.

With each passing sundown she grew more excited. Soon the Winter Solstice would be upon the land. She knew some people celebrated Yule, others Christmas. In her clan it had always been the Solstice. This year the symbolism was hitting very close to home for her. After all, Solstice was the ultimate portrayal of rebirth and new beginnings. Preparations would begin for the fertile seasons of Spring and Summer, once the days began to grow longer.

It mattered not to her that her new home was a sunless and dark place. She fully intended to go somewhere that the sun ordinarily smiled upon during daytime hours, and turn her face to the East at exactly 1:08 a.m. by the Eastern sky on the night of this miraculous event. Merrique would offer the annual prayers and sacrifices to her gods.

It would be the first time she would ever truly feel the connection with the land, the sky, her people, and herself. She knew it in her heart, and vowed it would be so.

he went around the house, hanging mistletoes and garlands and stars she'd made from things she found in nature. Behind the bar she hung a little etching of Jack-In-The-Green. Clusters of acorns filled decorative glassware. The little touches pleased her mightily--she'd really never had such an opportunity to decorate a home for the Solstice holiday. After spending the better part of the afternoon bustling about with her activities, she sank onto the bearskin rug before the fire for a nap.

In the evening, Walter came in from his day's adventures. It was the sound of his boots on the stairs that roused her from sleep. As he strode into the bedroom she was just sitting up, finger-combing her hair. With a sleepy, happy smile, she told him how she enjoyed decorating for Solstice.

His response shocked and hurt her.

"Oh," he said simply, his expression completely neutral.

With a wince she remembered that he was a paladin, his holy days varied greatly from her own. For a moment she felt foolish.

"Tell me," he urged, realizing he'd somehow struck a nerve with her. So the pair sat on the fur she'd just vacated and explained to him the significance of what the holiday meant to her, her people, and people of similar beliefs.

He agreed to celebrate with her, when she was through sharing her story with him.

The hunt was boring as usual. This time mixing it up some from the usual dungeons. And wandered into the Delucia Passage to hunt down an old foe from years ago. The Phoenix. Don't let it's size fool you it's a nasty monster. After several hours of hunting phoenix's which unfortunately were not as challanging as he remebered.

When he walked in the house he looked around and blinked. The home had been decorated with all sorts of garlands, stars, mistletoes. He walked upstairs in suprise. tossing his armor and weapons into a chest besides his desk, along side the days loot.

Walter saw Merri laying on the bear rug and she looked up at him sleeply and explained the decorations and the holiday, a holiday Walter had never heard of. After hearing about it he gladly agreed to celebrate with her.

Walter was very glad to have her around. His house hadn't ever been decorated like this before. It felt good to have someone he cared deeply for close by. Usually the holiday season was a lonely one for Walter. For the longest time his big stone house was cold, quiet and lonely. Now it's as if Merri breathed life right into it's walls. With her around it wasn't such a lonely cold house. Having her around brought a warm feeling to his heart. A heart that had been frozen and cold from years of death, destruction and war. This new feeling of warmth was one he was determined to keep forever.
