Ceinwyn watched Zeth sleeping beside her, a cheshire smile on his face, even in deep slumber. Such an innocent look belied the truth contained within . A devious mind, and ruthless, as well, when he so desired. He had awakened memories in her of times long since past.
Few would believe the ice witch of Umbra to have a warm side. She did not show it to many. Not since Mairsil had there been inspiration to do so. But, she was tired of taking lovers. She knew the time would come when she would want something more, and so often did the men she chose to bed disappoint her in the smallest of ways or prove unaccessible. Perhaps she really was too picky, though she liked to believe otherwise. There was something about the lycan under the sheets next to her that encouraged those well-buried memories to stir and play before her eyes. Something in him that had been missing in the men she had dallied with. An Umbran warlord, loyalty already proven many times over, fealty given on knee.
She did not really understand what had happened between Zeth and Dae. Obviously, there was some unhappiness there, else he would have remained loyal to her. Ceinwyn had wondered what had caused Dae to throw herself into the abyss, and all that she had come up with was that Dae was perhaps severely depressed both over the loss of her pregnancy and the knowledge that her mate had been unfaithful. This last Ceinwyn could not understand at all. Attempting to take one's own life spoke only cowardice in her mind, especially over a male. It was known, though, that pregnancy and its post-partum could cause odd behavioral changes in women. This was all the conclusion that Ceinwyn could arrive at for her motivation. Any guilt she had possibly felt over lying with Zeth had been washed away by the certainty she felt that Zeth and Dae had simply not been a good match. Noone could blame either of them for it, sometimes it just happened.
She laid back down, pulling more of the blanket over herself, causing a mumble from Zeth as he tried in his sleep to keep hold of his half of the blanket. She chuckled softly as her eyes closed.
Perhaps this time she would not make the same mistake that she had made with Mairsil. |
