Heeding Molly's warnings, and his own sense of dread, Thomas heads to Moonglow to do some research in The Lycaeum. As soon as he steps through the moongate, he doubles over in Pain. There hunger so intense that it manifests as a paralyzing pain deep within.

When the pain subsides to a manageable level, and he can focus his thoughts it is almost as if he is reborn. He feels alive, and can hear, smell, and taste much more clearly. Even walking is different, as he senses the ground closer than normal, and each blade of grass is far more vibrant, more alive.

When he walks into the city itself, the life within the city, drives him on. There are a few people about, and he is hungry. He feels the warmth of their blood, tastes the smell of fear on the air, and each heatbeat draws him close.

He knows that he should not be here, his control is slipping as his hunger rises from within.

He has enough control over his hunger to keep from killing the pretty young bride or the lady in blue. But he must feed. He has to appease this hunger for warm blood. His only choice is not if he kills, but what he kills.

He has never felt as alive as when he feels the life slipping out of his victim. Each swallow of blood gives him strength, makes the hunger slip away. Each swallow gives him control.
