She woke earlier than usually and glanced to her sleeping husband. She brushed his hair gently off his forehead and kissed him softly. He was retired but his mind would always be that of a general. This gave her comfort and she smiled silently to herself.
She felt the rumblings of hunger and decided to get out of bed. Silently she slipped out of bed and pulled her dress on, folding her nightrobe neatly and placing it on the chair near the bed. She leaned down to give Marcus another soft kiss on his brow before slipping quietly out of their room.
As she stepped out of the house, she breathed in deeply of the morning air. It was crisp and she knew there was a possibility the snow may be upon them soon again. She thought back to the first snowfall last year. She closed her eyes as she remembered... it was the day she had met Marcus at the altar. She had been so terrifiably nervous. But the day had been perfect, just as their life together was and would continue to be.
She opened the gate and quietly closed and latched it behind her. She would certainly pay a visit to the new stablemaster before she went to fetch something to eat. She wanted to ensure he knew the special care she wished of her endeared pets.
Gwyndie whinnied as soon as she walked in, followed in suit by Sierra and Asteri. Never had they made such a fuss in her presence before. As she neared Sierra's stall, the mare stepped back. "Silly girl" Gwyn spoke softly. "What's got you so nervous?" She held her tiny hand out to the mare, Sierra leaned forward to sniff her hand then lowered her head, still not moving closer. "Perhaps it is just too early for you." Gwyn shook her head to clear the thought of her mares being edgy and moved to the next stall and stepepd in. Bloo and Isto lay curled in separate corners. Bloo awoke as she entered and immediately came to her. Gwyn giggled softly as the big cu began to nudge her. She rubbed him behind his ears and hugged him around his neck. Bloo let out a small growl as Blaine walked up to the stall door. Gwyn turned to look at him, then back to Bloo. "Hush Bloo, he will not harm you." She tried to soothe the beast but still Bloo stood as he would if to guard her from harm. "Blaine please bring some apples. And please make sure you give some fresh meat to my mares. They seem tensed. Has something happened through the night to make them as such?"
"Yes M'Lady...and no...there was not'in tha' happen'd. They been silent but for whence you entered." With that Blaine ran off to get the fruit she requested.
Gwyn furrowed her tiny brow and looked to the stall beside her where Sierra stayed away from the wall closest to her. "What has gotten into them?" She whispered into the dog's ear. Bloo nudged her gently. A moment later Blaine began to open the door to the stall and Bloo once again tensed and growled. Blaine pulled the door closed quickly. She stood up and brushed the hay from the skirt of her dress. "Really, I don't understand what has gotten into these creatures this morning. Bloo is not normally this assertive with anyone." She walked to the stall door and took the apples offered to her.
"Perhaps he senses somet'in you do no' M'Lady. Perhaps he feels you need protect'in."
She watched him as he left to feed the rest of her pets. The mares calmed as he approached them and offered their meal. She held her hand down with an apple for Bloo. He took it from her in one bite being gentle enough not to bite her. He licked her hand anticipating another to which she looked down and offered it. She rubbed his head absently as she tried to think what could cause the unusual behavior. She placed the remaining apples in the bowl on the floor. "Now Bloo save some for Isto as well" she spoke softly to him. Giving him one more scratch behind the ears she left the stall. Bloo watched her between the slats as she headed to the door. Passing the stalls with her mares and unicorn, they began to whinny loudly at her. She paused to look at them, then the stablemaster with a look of disappointed confusion. Turning swiftly she left the stable and headed to the hostel. The rumblings of hunger beginning to make her feel a touch queasy.
She took a seat and ordered some milk and some breakfast. She watched as the new staff bustled around to get her some food. She looked down as the plate was set in front of her. The cook had made for her fried eggs. With all the rumblings of hunger, the sight of the eggs made her feel quite ill. She pushed the plate away from her as she felt her face flush. She tried to take in a deep breath but the smell of the eggs permeated her senses. Even her milk held no appeal. She swiftly rose and headed outside. She leaned against the signpost and began to take in another deep breath. This time she could not smell the eggs and her stomach began to relax. The tea... The Lady Temptation had given her tea last night that had seemed soothing. Perhaps if she were to speak with her... a bit more tea would calm her again.
Doing her best to compose herself, she made her way back to the manor, careful not to make any noise to wake Marcus as she entered. She slipped out to the garden and curled up in one of the chairs. It was not long before she forgot her hunger and fell asleep again. |
