The bell jar alone held nothing of interest. What was inside, however, was Ciara’s biggest breakthrough to date. A small feather lay within it, floating mid-air, without any strings holding it afloat. Ciara laid her head down next to it, smiling, and making small notes within a journal. She poured some of the potion that lathered the feather over a small square piece of wood she had, and watched, bated breath. A small cube began to shake, and Ciara held her breath, watching. Then, before her eyes, it stopped. Once again, nothing happened. Ciara gave a deep sigh, and sat back, kicking the table slightly. She kicked off the desk with her foot, stood up and sighed, moving her hand through her hair.
She walked by her mirror, and looked at it, watching her reflection make moose movements at her. She gave another sigh, and bent down, picking up a small book. She opened it and began to read.
Quote: | Fire was both hot and dry, earth cold and dry, water cold and moist, and air hot and moist. Every metal was a combination of these four principles, two of them interior and two exterior. |
Ciara looked at the feather, thinking intently. Fire. She looked back at the book, and kept reading. The theories she had been finding had been very useful in her research. Some were unfounded, and totally absurd, but others, such as this, seem to hold a sense of logic, that, though it seemed wrong, she knew there was something more to what she was reading.
Quote: | It can be reasoned that the transmutation of one metal into another could be effected by the rearrangement of its basic qualities. |
Ciara sat up quickly. This is the information that might help her. She kept reading, but noticed that the book she held spoke no further of what she wished to know. She threw the book down after an hour, and picked up the one beneath it, and read.
Quote: | In the 11th century, there was a debate among alchemist on whether the transmutation of substances was possible. |
Quote: | Azoth was considered to be a 'universal medicine' or 'universal solvent' sought in alchemy. |
Ciara stopped reading. What was this substance? Why had she not heard of it before? She read it again, just to be sure. She looked around for a small scrap of paper, and wrote the word down. Azoth. She noticed the picture next to it and nodded, and wrote a small note next to the word. She kept reading, but no other mention of this mysterious substance was made. She stared at her block again, then picked up another book, not noticing the day having been wasted away, and read, noticing the word mentioned more often. She had to read it more closely though. The substance kept being interchanged. Page 76 referred to a pure solvent, combining the three solvents of mercury, salt and sulphur, yet page 184 used it only in reference to Mercury. After reading, she finally came upon the jackpot. A reference to another book. She looked at her pile, and couldn’t find the book. She sighed, setting the book she was reading aside. She got up, and left the house, ignoring the hour of the day, and went through the moongate to Britain, and straight to the library. She perused the books but with no luck. She cursed out loud, only to hear a “shhhh” behind her. She looked behind her, and glared at the librarian. The librarian paled, staring at her deep red eyes, and looked away. Ciara left the building, knowing there was now a true breakthrough in her plans.
