Lee fumbled her way to the teleporter from her bedroom to the roof top. Upon reaching the top, she brought a hand to her forehead covering her eyes. “Ugh,” she mumbled. Elven eyes, bright sunshine and a hangover do not mix well. She went downstairs to the sitting room. She sat on the loveseat drinking a glass of water while the previous night’s events jostled about in her head.

Tie’s memorial service was over now. She thought of the beautiful night into which they had sent her remains. There were not many attendees, but that was to be expected. We are mere elves…she thought sarcastically, rolling her eyes a bit. “Ugh.” It hurt to move her eyes too much. Lord Fong had said some very nice, respectful things. Lee smiled a little at this and with his name came a thought of Rhiannon. She shrugged a little, too hung over to fret about that situation, and her mind moved on.

Vice Mayor Yolen, Daz and she had sat outside of the guild house late into the night. Lee had drunk a lot of ale. A lot. Daz had to take off to tend to the animals leaving Yolen and Lee discussing the meaning of the virtues. This is where her memory began to get fuzzy. Too, too much ale.

Wolfe. She sat up straight as this memory tried to settle itself in her mind. She tried to welcome it, but the alcohol had hindered her recollection. Some parts she did remember…Oh no...She thought as bits and pieces came to her mind. Rhiannon had told Lee the day before about the possibility of a werewolf on the Moonglow island. She had wondered about the reliability of Rhiannon’s instinct until the man, who called himself Wolfe, walked up on Yolen and Lee last night – very late last night.

Oh damn…she thought as her behavior came back to her. She had all but accused the man of being a werewolf. Her suspicions combined with what Rhiannon had told her about his behavior around the zoo wolves overtook her judgment. Oh damn…she had antagonized him! She had practically dared him to show himself…she made derogatory remark after remark about werewolves in general. She had even mentioned Tie hunting for wolves. She did not go into detail as to why Tie had hunted them, but when he inquired Lee took the chance to antagonize him further. What had she said? She thought hard. OH DAMN! For the thrill of it!? I said for the thrill of it? He had become angry, bordering on furious. He left Yolen and Lee after clutching his bow saying something about…what was it? She tapped her head trying to think…Oh yes. He had said, “The hunt begins.”

Lee! Stupid, stupid, stupid! You were just given a gift from the gods! A gift of insight and patience, but you ignored it all! A few drinks of ale and that’s it! All that you learned in the netherworld and all caution were thrown to the wind. Maybe he was just passing through! If he is a werewolf he will sure as hell attack now!

She laid back on the love seat, head pounding. She spoke aloud to herself, “What have I done?”

Wake up. Wake up, Lee. It’s almost ten o’clock. Come on, time to get up. The zookeeper’s request was greeted by the bleary bloodshot eyed gaze of Lee as she peeled her face off the pillow. She issued a grown and turned over on her side. Lee, you have class in about an hour. You had better get up soon. Another low groan, or was it a growl issued from the still half drunken elf as she refused to budge.

The zookeeper shrugged, left the house, and made his way through town. Greeting everyone he met with a friendly smile and an enthusiastic, Hello, good morning! He got very few responses from his courteous gestures, which was nothing new. The zookeeper, after all was an elf. The mayor and most of the ruling council were humans. Mayor Samon Triest’s views on the subject of elves were the views of most of the town’s people. A lot of them did not like elves, over the last year or so, Daz had gotten used to it. The snickers and laughs that were heard from behind his back meant very little to him. Petty humans have no vision, he thought as the made his way towards the town council headquarters.

The zookeeper turned the corner and froze. There in the courtyard before him lay the reason why Lee had not wanted to get up. The ground was littered with the food of the previous night’s reception. The grass was matted with food that had been trampled. The tables had been overturned and the chairs had been smashed. The empty wine bottles were everywhere. It looked like a pack of wolves or something had come through and gotten into a feeding frenzy or maybe Lee and the others had just gotten too rowdy the night before.

Daz gathered up the refuse and decided to give the scraps of food to the animals. A polar bear would love a nice quiche or pumpkin pie. Pumpkin was very good for animals and they had been eating a lot of it over the holidays. This was bad for the zoo because there is nothing worse than cleaning up after zoo animals that have been eating pumkin for at least two weeks solid. Well, solid, really wasn’t a good word to use in this case. The next few hours were spent washing out the zoo from the top to the bottom.

On the way home that night, the zookeeper picked up a light dinner for himself and Lee. He chuckled to himself as he purchased the bottle of wine. He supposed that the site of more wine would make her gag, but it would be interesting to see her reaction.

Lee and Daz sat at the dinner table, munching away on the warm dinner he had brought home. Lee had helped herself to some of the wine, too. Daz had been a bit surprised when she did, he had thought she would be sick at the thought of more drink…but, he had been incorrect. Lee started to sip on her second glass, listening to Daz continue to poke fun at her hangover. They were giggling a bit, talking about the way he had found the party scene.

“See Lee, I…” Daz began stressing the pronouns, “I knew when to call it a night. You didn’t see me drinking into all hours of the night, antagonizing suspect werewolves.” He chortled happily. “I behaved like I had some sense.” He nodded, laughing trying to be serious and then took off his hat.

An uncontrollable laugh caused Lee to spray wine all over the table. She began laughing hysterically trying to speak…

Daz chuckled nervously, “What is it Lee?” He wanted to laugh too but couldn’t figure out what was so funny.

Lee’s face was red now and tears streamed down her face. She could hardly breath much less speak, the laughter was so strong. Daz started laughing with her, not knowing why. When Lee was finally able to spit out a few words she said, “Behaved like you had some sense, aye?”

More laughter.

“Well, yes…” he said trying to figure out what she was talking about.

Lee finally managed the punch line, “So you willingly chose your new hair color?”

Daz brought his hands to his hair and ran upstairs to the mirror. “Oh, dear…it’s nothing a floppy hat, or a mask, won’t cover up.”

Pink. His hair was now a flamboyant, bright pink.

Lee laughed hysterically, pouring herself and Daz more wine.
