Wolfe’s rich green eyes metallically reflected the flickering glow of the lamp as he sat upon the small bed in his room. The walls were too near him, he was sweating a bit in the heat of the small space. The lamp flickered again, and then the unseen draft took the flame away, leaving Wolfe to sit in darkness. His eyes still seemed metallic in the moonlight filtering through the small windows of the room.
Moonglow. The ultimate hunting grounds. He had come here several weeks ago, come to watch. He saw the day to day lives of the residents, had already met the Mayor and Vice Mayor, and a particularly helpful girl whose name he didn’t remember. She seemed frightened of him. Frightened people said things they shouldn’t.
And Lady Lee. His rage had come forth only once, and it was at her will. She knew how to get under his skin, and it was his own fault. He had shown his affinity for wolves when that helpful, frightened girl had given him a tour of the Zoo. They would all know, now, that he cared about wolves. Another unsuspecting turn was that she had questioned him about Werewolves. What did she know of his past? What did he fail to hide? Everything, it seemed. After so many years of doing this, he had thought he would not make such an amateur mistake as revealing a weakness. Perhaps one of them had magic that made him careless. He couldn’t know.
They were helpless… scuttling carelessly in a green pasture free of danger, with their shepherd, Samon Triest, to lead them along. They seemed unconcerned with matters of the mainland, and it seemed that the island had few matters of its own.
But now a wolf was among them, and they would have matters to deal with. Wolfe’s pupils dilated rapidly as he thought of the prospects. Wolfe, the hunter of evil, the hunter of men, was now in their midst. Let them pray his bolt somehow missed as it flew from the shadows. Let them cower in fear as a rain of arrows, flaming and angry, fell upon their homes. Let them beg for mercy.
A wolf among lambs, thought Wolfe, as a small, dark laugh escaped his lips. |
