Eye sat on the replica of Lord British's throne within the darkened great hall of the temple of his god, gazing upon the slowly revolving globe of Sosaria before him. He was communing with his god. "Master, you had told me once you would tell me of my origins, who I am, and what I am. When will you do this?"
"Do you tire of waiting?" his god inquired.
"I do. I will not lie to you," he said, expecting some searing flash of pain to stun him into semi-unconsciousness as the penalty for insubordination. Yet none came.
"Your name was Lomar. You came from an obscure material plane long since gone... destroyed. Your soul was mine, as you were condemned to death there as its most evil and vile offender. No other god would dispute my claim."
"How is it I do not remember this?"
"The memory of your identity and your past was taken from you when your world ceased to be. It was part of your punishment by the gods."
"Was I responsible for its destruction?"
"You were greatly to blame, but the fault was not yours alone. The land's own inhabitants dared to vaunt themselves above the gods of Light and would not repent of it. The gods destroyed it. Look closely at the globe. What do you see?"
Eye, or Lomar, as he now knew himself to be, stood up and observed the globe closely. He saw a small point of glowing red light appear upon its dark surface, on one of the islands. "Magincia?" he asked.
"Yes. Magincia. A great catastrophe shall befall it, a smaller version of that which destroyed your world. The gods of Light have decreed it, and I, of course, desire it."
"Why master?"
Its pride mainly. Much like the inhabitants of your world, there are those who have shown it beyond the limit of endurance. Now there is one who, in his arrogance and daring, has defied the gods of Light."
"Magnate Isk?"
"Yes. He and his forbears have gone too far. Upon him and his generation shall this doom fall. He dared to wear the armor of evil and its powers shall be fully unleashed upon the city. The gods will not intervene to prevent it. I have seen to that."
Lomar watched as the spot on the map flared up briefly in flame. "Should I prophesy of it?"
"Do not be a fool. Let them all perish and all those who seek to defend the city from its judgment. No. We shall aid in its destruction, along with others with whom we have the same purpose."
Lomar did not need to be told what that purpose was. It was called by many names, but the result was invariably the same: oblivion, armageddon---the utter annihilation of what is. To Oggaroth and his devotees it was simply... destruction.
"What of our allies? Should I speak to them of this?"
"When the time comes, yes. If they are truly with us, they will join us in hastening its destruction. If not, they shall die with the rest."
Lomar sat back down and relaxed. This day had seen new revelation of him and the world about him. While he was not absolutely convinced of the truthfulness of what his god had told him, he was, nonetheless, satisfied with it. |
