The jaunt from the "civilized" part of Magincia to the moongate struck Scar oddly as he escorted a merchant toward it: there were no creatures to be seen---no serpents, mongbats, alligators, vines... not even the sight nor sound of a bird. This turn of events troubled Scar and he casually remarked to the merchant that he was not needed at all. Soon they stood in front of their objective. The merchant simply smiled and with a grateful wave stepped into the moongate.

Nothing happened.

The merchant, a man named Stanton, walked about the shimmering portal hoping it would activate. It did not. "What the ...?!" he exclaimed, disgustedly.

"Is it not working?" Scar asked him, dismounting and dispelling his ethereal steed. He touched the glowing blue oval of energy. Its magic was gone! As mounting dread fell over them both, Scar grabbed the man by the arm and led him quickly back down the path they had taken from the city.

After leaving a letter for the Magnate, Scar decided to venture out from the estate. To his amazement he saw people... citizens... back in their shops and establishments behaving as if nothing untoward had happened. The only thing that seemed out of place now was the lack of wildlife. "Am I going mad?" thought Scar. He briefly considered going back and destroying the letter, lest it appear that he made it all up on some drunken binge, or worse, that he had become a raving lunatic, but he didn't. Whatever had happened to the townsfolk could happen again, and take him also. Collecting his wits, he worked his way to the moongate to see if it was working. He was in luck. It opened for him and he proceeded to Yew, but when he tried to return to Magincia, it did not work. "I am not imagining this," he said aloud.

"No, you aren't" came a voice from behind him. "If you are trying to get to Magincia from here, forget it."

Scar turned to face the man, a pot-bellied, balding fellow dressed in clothes fit for a dandy. "It wasn't working at all for a time in Magincia," he remarked.

"I know. I do a lot of business there. But you can get there by ship from the Trinsic docks... a tip I heard from a fellow merchant."

Scar thanked the man and used the moongate to get to Trinsic where he found the ship, and journeyed safely back to Magincia.
