Merrique huddled at the Matriarch Ceinwyn's feet, trembling from fear and gratitude combined. The bored looking assistant barkeep busied himself polishing cups as the two women occupied the domain of the inn's gloom. The frightened gypsy held her broken right hand to her chest as, with her left, she lifted the hem of the Matriarch's robe to her lips, a gesture generally reserved for only the Queen of the Gypsy magicians and healers. Merrique whispered words in the old language of her people, swearing in near silence that she would always be grateful for the Matriarch's intervention, and no doubt saving her life. A bed! she thought, as she pledged her appreciation, She has given me a real bed to sleep in, away from the cold! As she got to her feet, unable to stop the uncontrollable shivering, Merrique barely comprehended the Matriarch's words, that soon a healer would be along to put to right what had gone so wrong. A job, a job and a bed!
